Frostrail's Closed Beta Is Live On Steam, Co-Op Survival FPS Opens Up
Frostrail 's closed beta is live on Steam as part of Steam's PvE Survival Crafting Fest. The co-op survival FPS from Barotrauma developer FakeFish and publisher Shiro Unlimited had already crossed 300,000 wishlists ahead of today's launch, following an earlier playtest in April that gave the public its first hands-on look.
Surviving a Frozen Wasteland by Train
Frostrail puts players aboard an armored locomotive traveling through an unending, post-apocalyptic blizzard, solo or in teams of up to four. The train serves as both transportation and mobile base, requiring stops to scavenge ruined villages, abandoned mining camps, and underground vaults for food, materials, and weapons before the cold or the wasteland's threats close in.
Those threats include Revenants, ravenous creatures that stalk survivors and have to be fought off in close-quarters FPS combat using a mix of melee and ranged weapons. Deeper crafting systems let players turn scavenged materials into upgraded gear and new additions to the train itself, including research stations, medical bays, and entirely new cars, gradually building the locomotive into a proper mobile fortress as the run pushes further into the wasteland.
Feedback-Driven Development Ahead of Early Access
FakeFish Lead Designer Ez Jämsen said community feedback has been "central to making Frostrail the best game it can be," framing the closed beta as the next step in refining the game ahead of its planned Early Access launch.
FakeFish, based in Turku, Finland, built its reputation on Barotrauma , the submarine survival game that has sold more than 3 million units since its 2019 launch. Shiro Unlimited, the publishing label behind Frostrail , draws on more than 12 years of experience developing and publishing indie titles.
Players interested in the closed beta can sign up now through the game's Steam page . Frostrail is targeting Steam Early Access for Windows PC in Q4 2026, with support for English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese.
