Metroid Prime 4: Beyond — Samus Returns December 4, 2025
Nintendo has finally given fans of the Metroid Prime series something long awaited: a release date. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will arrive on December 4, 2025 for both Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2, as revealed during the September 12 Nintendo Direct. The trailer shown off features Samus Aran in action, introducing new gameplay elements, environments, and what may be her most daring mission yet.
New Ways to Play: Vi-O-La, Psychic Powers, and Viewros
Beyond is shaping up to take the series in bold directions. Samus will now navigate the mysterious planet Viewros, a varied landscape that includes open desert biomes and harsh snowstorms. Traversal is upgraded via a futuristic motorbike named Vi-O-La, which appears in trailer footage, giving Samus a new tool for speed and combat exploration.
Another big change: Samus now possesses psychic abilities. These powers allow her to manipulate environmental mechanisms—moving metallic objects, guiding shot trajectories, and interacting with doors or magnetic forces in new ways. These features promise to change how exploration and puzzle-solving work in the game.
Switch 2 Edition: Enhanced Performance & Features
For owners of the newest hardware, Beyond will offer a specially optimized version for Switch 2. This Nintendo Switch 2 Edition includes several enhancements: up to 4K resolution at 60fps or 1080p/120fps, HDR support, and exclusive control options including using the Joy-Con 2 like a mouse for more precise aiming.
These visual and performance upgrades aim to make the more ambitious scale of Beyond feel smoother and more immersive, especially given the wider biomes and higher speed traversal with Vi-O-La.
After years of anticipation—since Metroid Prime 4 was first announced in 2017 and subsequently rebooted in 2019—Beyond looks like it could breathe new life into the Prime subseries. The addition of psychic powers, a motorbike for traversal, open-environment segments, and enhanced performance on the Switch 2 suggest Nintendo is pushing this as more than just "Metroid Prime 4." It's Beyond those expectations. December can't come soon enough.
