Nintendo Wants Less 'eSlop' on the Switch 2 eShop

Nintendo is reportedly taking a stricter approach to game approvals on the Switch 2 in an effort to avoid a repeat of the original Switch eShop's " eSlop " reputation. The original Switch eShop filled up with very low‑effort games, asset flips, and ultra‑cheap shovelware that buried better indie titles and made browsing messy over time.

In a recent interview with RPG Site, New Blood Interactive CEO Dave Oshry said Nintendo is "still pretty cagey" about which games can launch on the new system, even for studios that already have titles on the first Switch.

Oshry shared that New Blood has Switch 2 kits and is already running its retro shooter Dusk at 120 frames per second with mouse support on the hardware. He also said that Nintendo "has been very nice" to work with, but that the brand is more careful with native Switch 2 releases because it doesn't want the new eShop to turn into "a giant slop fest." This can mean slower (and fewer) approvals for Switch 2 titles.

Though Nintendo is tightening up its review process for the Switch 2 eShop, low-quality games are still available on the original eShop. Some indie developers worry that stricter checks on the new app version could also delay or block genuine projects.

Developers hope clearer guidelines and better discovery tools will balance Nintendo's desire to cut "slop" with the need to keep the platform open to a wide range of smaller teams.
