One Year Ago Today, One of the Best Metroidvanias Ever Released, and Fans Are Still Waiting for DLC

Metroidvania fans have been eating well over the past few years. Dead Cells , Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night , Ori and the Will of the Wisps , and several others have found a lot of success and celebration from critics and fans. Later this year, Castlevania: Belmont's Curse will be revitalizing the Castlevania series itself, while one of the most popular Metroidvanias will also be getting free DLC–and we still don't know much about it.

Today, September 4, 2026, is the first anniversary of the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong . Silksong is the sequel to the original breakout indie hit, Hollow Knight , which was released in 2017. Silksong had a long and secretive development, and it seems its upcoming DLC is following the same pattern.

Hollow Knight: Silksong follows the journey of Hornet, a major character from the original game, on her journey to escape the land of Pharloom after she is captured. Expanding on the elements established by its predecessor, Silksong features a high level of difficulty, platforming challenges, boss encounters, and cryptic navigation.

Silksong originally began development as DLC for the original game as part of a 2014 Kickstarter stretch goal, but the scope of the project expanded into a full game after years of development. The game was also noteworthy for its mysterious marketing, which led to years of speculation on when it would release as well as the amount of content in the game.

According to Metacritic , Hollow Knight: Silksong sits at a metascore of 90. Critics praised the game's combat, metroidvania elements, platforming, atmosphere, and boss fights. There was some concern about the game's high difficulty and the need to complete side quests to fully finish the game.

Since its release, developer Team Cherry has committed to releasing DLC for the game. The first expansion, called Sea of Sorrow , is in development, but not much else is known about it. A teaser trailer was revealed eight months ago, but it's been radio silent since then.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Sea of Sorrow expansion is scheduled to be released sometime in 2026.
