Surprise: Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 Handheld With OLED Screen Is Pricey

At Computex, Asus teased a premium version of the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld with an OLED screen, and we now know how much it will cost: an eye-watering $1,299.

The company made the announcement as it kicked off preorders for the ROG Xbox Ally X20, which was designed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ROG gaming brand. The product is slated to officially go on sale Oct. 15th.

The X20 features a 7.4-inch OLED screen that's slightly larger than the 7-inch display on last year's Xbox Ally X . That OLED screen is also brighter at 1,400 nits in HDR, up from 500 nits.  

But as we suspected, the X20 isn't cheap. It costs $300 more than the maxed-out Xbox Ally X, currently on sale for $999 at Best Buy . Aside from the OLED screen, the X20 retains the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, along with 24GB of DDR5 RAM and 1TB of storage, even as the AI-driven memory shortage has been inflating prices everywhere. 

Asus also added some flair to the handheld, which features a "semi-translucent black chassis," gold accents, custom gold-plated fans, and gold lighting around the joysticks.  

To really soup up the X20, Asus is offering the option to buy the handheld with a pair of augmented-reality R1 Edition glasses from XReal. "These next-level AR glasses utilize a pair of 1080p Micro-OLED displays to create a virtual 171-inch screen at 4 meters, covering 95% of your focused viewing area for incredible immersion," Asus says. 

But the full bundle is even more expensive, costing a whopping $2,499 . Included in the bundle are the AR glasses, and "a custom Killswitch case from Dbrand," and another "custom Protector Case from Pelican," the company adds. 

Although Asus says it's accepting preorders, the company's US-based website only shows a "Notify Me" button for ordering the Ally X20. It also says interested customers can buy the XReal R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses on their own for $799, but that, too, does not appear to be available for purchase yet. But Asus says you can expect the glasses to go up for sale in mid-September.
