A monarch butterfly, eraser and pickle are just a few of the new emojis dropping next year.

Nine new emojis will be released by the Unicode Consortium, the nonprofit responsible for approving new emojis, in spring 2027, Jennifer Daniel, chair of Unicode's emoji subcommittee, told USA TODAY. The nine new emojis are part of the Emoji 18.0 release.

"Are these new glyphs indispensable?" Daniel wrote in a Substack post on July 14 announcing the new emojis. "No. Is  anything  truly indispensable? Also, no. But they are ours to text our moms, troll our group chats, and beautifully obfuscate or elevate our true feelings."

What are the new emojis?

The new emojis include:

• Cracking face

• Leftwards thumb sign

• Rightwards thumb sign

• Eraser

• Pickle

• Monarch butterfly

• Net with handle

• Meteor

• Lighthouse

When are the new emojis available?

The nine new emojis will be made publicly available in September, but people will begin seeing them on their devices in spring 2027, Daniel told USA TODAY.

Anyone can submit a new emoji design

While the Unicode Consortium is the official body that approves new emoji designs, the ideas placed in front of the organization can be made by anyone. The consortium opened emoji submissions from the general public in 2025.

The consortium is accepting new emoji submissions through July 31, according to the organization's website. The organization encourages designers to think of emoji concepts that can have multiple uses, be used alongside other emojis, appear distinct, and be used frequently across the globe. According to the consortium, only about 30 new emojis are approved each year, so the competition to make it through with an idea is tight.
