Looking after your body is no longer just about getting a good workout in; it's ensuring that you're properly recuperating afterwards, too. Luckily, in 2026, there is a huge range of products designed to aid recovery.
In fact, the recovery tech boom is playing a big role in the growth of the sports technology market overall. Estimates show it's projected to grow from $39.6 billion in 2026 to $192.3 billion by 2034.
Two of the most popular products in this category are massage guns and compression boots . Both claim to ease muscle soreness and help you bounce back to training sooner, but they sit at very different price points. You can pick up a basic gun from around £40, whereas the cheapest boots we tested were £300. But which method is actually better for improving workout recovery?
Massage guns can help to improve flexibility in older muscles
Massage guns work by delivering repeated percussion and vibration to one specific area, which helps improve the mobility and flexibility of a specific muscle. In turn, this can make your muscles feel less tense and stiff. These gadgets can be used before and after workout sessions.
While useful for all ages, massage guns can be helpful for anyone looking to improve range of movement, ease muscle stiffness and boost blood flow – whether exercising or not.
"It will help temporarily improve your mobility so that you feel like you've got a bit more flexibility in that muscle," explains Jonathan Wreaves, clinical physiologist at preventative health clinic Viavi .
But how do they actually work?
Most massage guns offer a revolutions per minute (RPM) range, which refers to how many times the massage head moves back and forth every minute. This tends to be somewhere between 1200 and 3500. The lower range is ideal for gentle massage and warming up, while a higher RPM is better for targeting bigger muscle groups and more intense tightness.

A big misconception about massage guns is that they can get rid of muscle knots and permanently relieve points of tension. Although they can provide short-term relief, they do this by improving the mobility and flexibility of a muscle or joint, rather than working into the muscle fascia and getting rid of knots altogether, like a sports massage might.
What a lot of people don't realise is that massage guns are better for warming up than they are for recovering after a workout.
"If someone wants more mobility in a certain area that feels stiff before their training session, massage guns will help to improve the flexibility of that muscle in the 30 minutes or so afterwards," Wreaves says.
Are massage guns worth buying?
With this in mind, massage guns are an ideal way to prepare for workouts as you age and naturally lose flexibility. They can also be beneficial for improving performance in a variety of sports and modalities, such as running and lifting.
Massage guns can still be used for recovery, particularly if you want temporary relief from muscle soreness, but they won't actually get rid of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMs). They will, however, improve something called "perceptual recovery", which refers to how much you notice muscle soreness, making them a good option for immediate and short-term tension relief.
Compression boots offer gentle, full-leg massage
Compression boots are inflatable, electronic leg sleeves that help to reduce tension in the legs through a process called intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC). This pushes deoxygenated blood towards the heart and helps the body replenish the legs with freshly oxygenated blood – a process called venous return – which can ease soreness.
"This means there's less swelling and pressure, and it improves the feeling of having heavy legs," Wreaves says.
Again, compression boots are also great for all ages, but particularly midlifers, as they can improve blood flow (natural circulation slows with age), ease sore muscles, which become weaker with age and help to reduce leg swelling.
How do compression boots work?
Recovery boots are usually divided into four chambers which inflate gradually, a process that a lot of people find relaxing. After a long run or cycle, they can provide immediate relief for fatigued legs. Plus, it's a passive recovery method, meaning that once you've got the boots on, you don't need to do anything to reap the rewards, apart from sit back and relax.
Similarly to massage guns, recovery boots won't speed up the post-workout recovery process in the same way that a good night's sleep, eating enough protein or staying hydrated might. However, they do improve the aforementioned perceptual recovery, and might reduce the feeling of delayed onset muscle soreness, which could help you perform better if you train more than once a day, or on consecutive days.
"The best way to think about it is if you have a sponge full of water, there's a lot of swelling," Wreaves says. "If you squeeze that water out, you're not changing the microfibre tears within the sponge, but there's less pressure in it.
"Psychologically, if you're going into a workout and feel less sore, that's a positive thing and it may actually help with motivation and completing a good quality session."
It's worth noting that recovery boots are not only expensive, but can be bulky and less portable than a massage gun, making them a less practical recovery method. However, if lower-body soreness is something you struggle with, they could be a good option.
What does the research actually say?
As Wreaves explains, both massage guns and compression boots improve "perceptual recovery", which refers to the extent of discomfort you notice from DOMs, rather than physically repairing the muscle tissue. Lifestyle factors, on the other hand, including sleep, nutrition and hydration, can.
"Sleep quality is critical to improving muscle repair and protein intake has been shown to support muscle recovery alongside resistance training, and hydration is critical for improving recovery and performance the following day," Wreaves says.
However, perceived recovery is still important: it can boost your motivation and make training feel easier, and research has shown that compression boots can indeed improve perceived recovery. A 2023 review also found that massage guns reduce perceived soreness, as well as improving flexibility and range of motion.
The bottom line is that neither of these recovery gadgets will magically accelerate muscle tissue repair overnight, but they are useful tools for making workouts more enjoyable and effective, as well as reducing the impact DOMs have on your body.

Massage guns and compression boots serve two different purposes. Massage guns can help improve mobility and flexibility, and can reduce muscle soreness in the short-term, whereas compression boots reduce swelling and soreness in the legs after a workout. The best option for you will depend on your goals.
"If someone wants to feel better in their legs after a session, compression boots are the better option," says Wreaves. "If their aim is to have more flexibility and mobility in a specific area of the body before exercise so they can get a greater range of movement and reduce their risk of injury, a massage gun is better."
If you want to improve the way your body moves as you age, rather than simply how it feels, a massage gun might be preferable as it actively aids mobility as well as providing some relief. They are also far more affordable.
Meanwhile, compression boots will better suit endurance athletes or anyone suffering with overall leg fatigue because they stand on their feet for long hours or are prone to water retention.
Whatever option you choose, though, you'll be working towards reducing stiffness and feeling better in your body – and that can only be a good thing.
