Setting Up Multiple Users and Parental Controls on Plex

Part of the fun of getting Plex up and running is inviting friends and family to stream the content you have, from music to movies. Everyone in your house can have their own user profile, and you can even access parental controls to adjust content accordingly.

How to Create Users in Plex

Within your Plex server, you can create individual users for everyone in your home. It's most useful if you want to, say, create users for your kids without needing to create entirely new Plex accounts, too. As an admin, only you can make them, too. If you haven't started your server yet, be on the lookout for the most ideal features in a Plex server .

1. First off, make sure your Plex Media Server is running, then launch Plex.

2. Select your profile icon in the top-right corner and choose 'Account Settings.' On the left-hand sidebar, choose 'Plex Home.'

3. Now select 'Create Managed Account' and give the user a name. You may also adjust restrictions based on ratings.

4. On the following window, choose which Plex libraries they have access to. Know that even if you select a library with content that's higher than the user's rating chosen, it'll still be inaccessible.

5. Next, decide if you want the user to download your content or access live TV, then finish up by selecting 'Add.' To remove a user, find their account and select the little X on the right-hand side.

You can create multiple Plex users but know that you'll be limited to just one extra user (other than yourself) unless you're subscribed to Plex Pass.

How to Invite Plex Users

If you want people to access your Plex media server outside your home, they'll need a Plex account. It's quick, easy, and free. Also, it's a way of skirting around the one-user limitation that you run into when you aren't subscribed to Plex Pass .

1. Open 'Account Settings' and select 'Manage Library Access.'

2. Choose 'Grant Library Access,' then type either the person's username or email, then choose 'Continue.'

3. Select the libraries you want them to have access to and if they're able to download content, then select 'Send.'

4. To remove a Plex Account from your server, go back into 'Manage Library Access' and click the little X next to their name on the far right side.

On their end, they accept the invite (from their email), and they'll then have access to your Plex media server. Unlike creating users, you won't have any parental control linked to their account.

Getting Plex users to flock to your media server is painless, and that makes it all the easier to share your content. It's also just as easy to remove users from your server, too. Hopefully, you made sure to organize your Plex media library beforehand so users can actually find stuff they want to watch.
