The 1st and 2nd Gen Nest Thermostat Are Dead

One of the downsides of owning smart home tech is the possibility that it can become useless. It's always a risk with devices that rely on cloud services. That's exactly what's happening to the first and second-generation Nest Thermostats—at least partially.

The Nest Thermostat launched all the way back in 2011 and 2012, and it was revolutionary. The original Nest created an entire new product category and kicked off the modern smart home. The ability to control your thermostat from your phone anywhere in the world was a killer feature, and that convenience is officially dead.

As of October 25th, these older units have been cut off from the cloud. Google announced that it would be ending support for the original Nest Thermostats back in April , and that time is here. If you're still using one, the device is being unpaired and removed from both the Google Nest and Google Home apps. You won't be able to adjust the temperature, get notifications, or adjust settings from your phone anymore.

The end of support also brings an end to third-party assistant support, which means they can no longer communicate with your thermostat. Multi-device Eco mode and Nest Protect connectivity are also gone. Essentially, anything that happened outside of the controls on the physical device won't work anymore.

Speaking of the physical device, the tiny silver lining is that they will still function as a "dumb" thermostat. You can manually adjust the temperature and switch between heating and cooling modes. But the core smart functionality that you probably bought the device for is never coming back.

If you own one of the affected devices, Google says you should have received an email with a special offer. They're offering a fourth-gen Nest Learning Thermostat for $149.99. That's a pretty solid discount since the regular price is $279.99. Having to shell out money to replace perfectly fine hardware is annoying, but considering these devices are well over 10 years old, it's not a bad time to upgrade.
