A portable power station usually brings to mind camping trips, tailgates, or backup electricity during an outage. 

But one EcoFlow owner shared one less obvious use for these appliances: helping recharge a car battery when there was no wall outlet nearby.

Here's what to know

In a post on Reddit's r/Ecoflow_Community, the original poster explained that his power station was not being used as a direct jump starter but instead supplied electricity to a separate charger connected to the vehicle's 12-volt battery.

The OP wrote that, "Before anyone says 'that can't work' — yes, it can. And no, I'm not using the EcoFlow to magically jump-start the car."

They added, "The EcoFlow is powering a proper battery charger, which is connected to the vehicle's 12V battery. The charger does the actual work; the power station is simply providing power… Is it the most efficient way to charge a car battery? Probably not. Is it useful when you're stuck somewhere without AC power? Absolutely"

Other Reddit users said the approach was not unheard of. One commenter wrote , "I've used mine quite a few times to power an AC battery charger."

Charging a weak or dead car battery is not the same as jump-starting a vehicle. A jump starter is designed to deliver a rapid burst of power to crank an engine, while a charger gradually restores the battery.

One benefit of a portable power station is that it can provide electricity in places where a standard outlet is not easily available.
