Sony Unveils BRAVIA 7 II and BRAVIA 9 II With New TRUE RGB Technology

Over the past year, RGB backlighting has quickly become the next big battleground. Every manufacturer has introduced their own takes on RGB-based LCD technology, with each company promising improvements in brightness, color performance, and HDR reproduction compared to traditional Mini LED designs.

One company that has been absent from that conversation is Sony....until now.

While competitors rushed their latest RGB products to market, Sony took a different approach, spending several years developing what it calls its TRUE RGB platform. Now that work is finally making its way into consumer products with the introduction of two new TVs: the BRAVIA 7 II and BRAVIA 9 II.

These new models replace the previous Mini LED-based BRAVIA 7 and BRAVIA 9 and represent Sony's first entry into the modern RGB TV category. Rather than relying on a traditional blue LED backlight paired with quantum dots or color filters, Sony's new system uses independently controlled red, green, and blue LEDs to generate light directly at the source. According to Sony, the result is higher brightness, improved color accuracy, greater color saturation, and a wider color gamut that moves closer to the BT.2020 standard used by modern HDR formats such as Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

Sony says development of TRUE RGB began back in 2021 during the COVID era. While several manufacturers have introduced RGB-based televisions recently, Sony argues that not all RGB implementations are created equally. At the heart of both new TVs is Sony's RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro processor, which independently controls the red, green, and blue LEDs across the backlight system.

The company's goal is to maintain full RGB performance even when multiple colors appear on screen simultaneously. In simple terms, Sony wants the TV to maintain color purity and saturation regardless of scene complexity. A bright red object next to a bright white object, for example, should remain accurate without introducing unwanted tinting or color contamination.

BRAVIA 9 II Becomes Sony's New LCD Flagship

Leading the lineup is the BRAVIA 9 II, which receives Sony's most advanced implementation of TRUE RGB technology. The TV utilizes a VA LCD panel with wide viewing angle technology and pairs it with the company's most sophisticated RGB backlight system. It will be available in 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch screen sizes, along with an enormous 115-inch version.

One of the biggest additions exclusive to the BRAVIA 9 II is a new anti-reflective treatment called Immersive Black Screen Pro. Unlike some matte screen coatings that can reduce contrast or alter black levels, Sony says this new treatment is designed to absorb and disperse ambient light while preserving image fidelity.

The BRAVIA 9 II also receives several upgrades over the BRAVIA 7 II, including:

• Approximately three times the dimming zones

• Higher peak brightness capability

• Improved blooming control

• Better screen uniformity

• Sony's Luminance Booster Pro processing

• Acoustic Multi-Audio+ audio system

• Beam Tweeters positioned at the top of the display

• Immersive Black Screen Pro coating

BRAVIA 7 II Brings TRUE RGB to More Screen Sizes

While the BRAVIA 9 II sits at the top of the lineup, the BRAVIA 7 II shares many of the same core technologies. It uses a scaled-down version of Sony's TRUE RGB system powered by the same RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro processor and utilizes the same LCD panel technology. The primary differences come down to dimming zone count, peak brightness capability, audio performance, and the absence of the Immersive Black Screen Pro coating.

The BRAVIA 7 II will be available in a much broader range of screen sizes:

• 50-inch

• 55-inch

• 65-inch

• 75-inch

• 85-inch

• 98-inch

For buyers interested in RGB backlighting but not looking to spend flagship-level money, the BRAVIA 7 II will likely be the more practical option.

Both TVs introduce a new stand design Sony calls Mirage. Available on models up to 85 inches, the stand uses a translucent lenticular panel that allows light to pass through while helping conceal power and HDMI cables routed behind the display. The effect is intended to create a cleaner appearance by making cables seem to disappear behind the television. The 115-inch BRAVIA 9 II uses a different stand design due to its larger size and weight requirements.

Outside of the backlighting differences, the BRAVIA 7 II and BRAVIA 9 II share a substantial feature set.
