TCL QM7L SQD Mini-LED TV Review: A Budget TV With Loads to Love

The TCL QM7L represents everything we think of when we talk about the brand. TCL rose to prominence making budget and midrange 4K TVs that punch above their price points. So while the QM8L I recently tested offers the best balance of performance and price the brand has to offer this year, the 7L reflects that "best bang for your buck" reputation that originally earned our attention.
Like TCL's other 2026 TVs, the QM7L refreshes its display tech to leverage "super quantum dot" (SQD) display technology, which adds brightness and improves color. While it doesn't match the QM8L's peak brightness and contrast, the 7L costs just $1,500 for a 65-inch model, about $1,000 less than its more powerful sibling. It also comes in smaller sizes, making it a more versatile choice for budget-conscious shoppers or for bedrooms and other spaces where you may want a smaller screen.
After more than a week of testing, the TCL QM7L clearly upholds the brand's reputation for pushing up the standards for midrange TVs . You get stellar image quality and high-end features for a relatively contained price, with the base model starting at $1,000. There are plenty of technical reasons to spend more on a high-end set, but most viewers should be impressed by what they see.

Bright Picture and Vivid Colors

With the addition of TCL's Super Quantum Dot tech, the QM7L is a more vibrant, accurate TV than last year's QM7K . Surprisingly, its peak brightness remains unchanged—up to 3,000 nits—but the new enhancements intensify its colors and boost its high-dynamic-range (HDR) capabilities for better precision and saturation.
At this price point, though, we're less concerned with game-changing technology and more looking at whether this TV has other flaws in the picture quality department. Thankfully, the QM7L minimizes blooming, which occurs when displaying a bright color against a dark background. I've experienced this effect in older models, so this change felt particularly palpable.

The TV's viewing angles are also excellent, and so is its performance as a gaming console display. Playing Gran Turismo 7 on my PlayStation 5 Pro looked amazing on the TV. Setting aside technical color measurements, the SQD-driven color really pops under ideal conditions.
Respectable Audio Performance
Like the QM7K, the 7L features a Bang & Olufsen-tuned speaker system that delivers powerful, detail-rich sound out of the box. My favorite audio feature was the custom Beosound mode, which helped me tweak the sonic experience via an intuitive on-screen interface.
There are no upward-firing speakers for a full spatial audio experience, but that's okay, as the pricier QM8L lacks them, too. The QM7L supports Dolby Atmos, and you can easily upgrade its sound without breaking the bank through a soundbar or TCL's own Z100 wireless speakers with Dolby Atmos Flex Connect.
Not Made for the Spotlight

The QM7L, like many of TCL's current and former Mini-LED TVs, has limited ability to withstand direct light and less-than-ideal lighting conditions, especially when showcasing dark scenes. It's an issue across the brand, even with TCL's flagship X11L .
And historically, down-range TVs tend to have outdated features. Case in point: the QM7L only supports WiFi 5, which is a generation (or two) behind WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E that other 2026 TVs offer. Folks can live without the standard, especially if using an external streaming device like an Amazon Fire TV Stick or an Apple TV 4K , but that may change over the course of their next TV's lifespan. It's a minor, easily fixable concern (via an external player), but something to keep in mind.
Who Should Buy the TCL QM7L?
Starting at $1,000, the QM7L is a great middle ground for folks who want a 2026 TV with brand-new display technology but can't shell out $2,000 to $2,500 for the newest versions of elite OLED sets like the Samsung S95H or the LG C6 . Super quantum dots do make a noticeable difference in QM7L performance compared to previous models, producing lifelike colors, deep contrast, and better-controlled blooming. Those are real-world improvements that you will feel, not just a better number on a spec sheet.
