Galaxy Z Fold 8 Is Reportedly a Hit, and Samsung Is Borrowing Parts to Ship More

If you've been eyeing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, you might want to place your order soon. According to ZDNet Korea , demand for the new passport-style foldable has exceeded Samsung's expectations, and the company is now struggling to accelerate production due to limited supplies for a key component.

Since its release in July, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has gained widespread attention for its compact book-style form factor. To meet the growing demand, Samsung reportedly placed orders for more components last month, but it ran into constraints involving one key component: the display driver IC (DDIs).

DDIs control the colors and brightness entering the pixels, and for Samsung, it is custom-made for each model by a Taiwanese company called UMC. After the Fold 8's success, Samsung placed an "express order" for DDIs, but UMC reportedly told the company that fulfilling the request would be difficult. 

According to ZDNet Korea, it takes up to four months to produce and ship DDIs, and UMC has already hit its production capacity for these chips. So, instead of waiting for a fresh supply of DDIs, Samsung will now be using the chips reserved for next year's models, sources say. This likely means Samsung had already secured DDIs for the Z Fold 8's successor, but may now have to divert that supply to meet demand for the current model.

For now, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 is still available for purchase. The device earned a positive review from PCMag, with our expert Kimberly Gedeon praising the device's design, battery life, performance, and AI features.

Apple is expected to launch a foldable iPhone in a similar form factor next week .
