When is the iPhone 17 coming out? What to know in Tennessee after Apple reveals new updates, features

Apple announced the launch of the newest series of Apple products during the company's "Awe Dropping" event on Sept. 9.

The event's highlight was the announcement of Apple's new Air model to replace the Plus as the second-tier phone offering. Apple says it is its thinnest iPhone ever.

Apple announced it would  follow its usual release pattern , setting its pre-order date at the end of the week and having the phones hit shelves shortly after.

Here's what to know about the release of the iPhone 17 and iOS 26.

When does the iPhone 17 release?

Pre-order for the iPhone 17 starts on Sept. 12. The iPhone 17 line will hit shelves the following week on Sept. 19.

How much is the iPhone 17?

Apple announced it will start the iPhone 17 at $799, with the iPhone Air starting at $999, the iPhone Pro starting at $1,099 and the iPhone Pro Max starting at $1,199.

• The  iPhone 17 will be available in black, white, steel gray, light blue, green, and purple color options.

• The  iPhone 17 Air is set to come in black, white, light gold, and sky blue.

• The  Pro and Pro Max models will be offered in blue, orange and silver.

What are the new iPhone 17 features

The iPhone 17's ProMotion display will see the always-on display capability added to it from the previous generation's Pro and Pro Max models. The display will also grow slightly to 6.3 inches.

The primary camera system has a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 12-megapixel macro camera. The front-facing camera will feature a square sensor, according to the company, which allows for multiple photo orientations when used for selfies.

The iPhone 17 Airis just 5.6 millimeters thick , making it approximately one-third thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro, and it weighs 165 grams. It features a 6.6-inch ProMotion display, which is housed in a lightweight titanium-aluminum frame surrounded by Ceramic Shield 2.

The Air will be powered by an A19 Pro chip and Apple C1X modem with 12 GB of RAM. Apple stated that the phone will offer all-day battery life.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Maxfeature a new camera bar that spans the entire width of the phone. The camera has 48 megapixels and includes a telephoto lens with options for 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x optical zoom. It can also record video in 8 K resolution.

Both premium models will have an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip for faster connectivity.

Apple announced that the Pro and Pro Max will have brighter displays and can support 39 hours of video playback.

When does iOS 26 come out?

During the same event where the iPhone 17 and other new devices were announced, Apple shared that the latest version of its operating system will be released within the next week as well. iOS 26 is slated to launch Sept. 15, as a free software update, the tech giant revealed in a  news release.

The company announced at the event that the operating system will feature upgrades to its Apple Intelligence capabilities, including enhanced live translation functions. Visual intelligence has also been improved, allowing users to take screenshots and search directly on the iPhone.
