T-Mobile Is Auto-Upgrading Plans for Some Users, This Time at No Extra Cost

T-Mobile is migrating customers on certain legacy plans to its Go5G Plus plan this month—at no extra cost. Impacted customers have begun receiving notifications via text and email, and the change will reflect in their accounts on the first bill after Aug. 13. 

According to Android Authority, Magenta Max, One, and One Plus users are among those impacted. They don't have to do anything special to get the upgrade. T-Mobile will manage the transfer and add the benefits.  

"We appreciate you being a loyal T-Mobile member and always want to help you find the best value. Beginning with your next bill cycle after August 13, we're upgrading your plan to Go5G Plus, which includes all the benefits you already have and more at no extra cost," T-Mobile says on its website .

Benefits of moving to the Go5G Plus plan include 50GB of hotspot data, better phone deals, and higher speed data in Canada & Mexico. 

T-Mobile didn't specify the motive behind the move, but given its history with auto-upgrades, customers are bound to be wary. When the carrier tried something similar in 2023, it was forcing customers to move to a plan that cost an additional $5 per month. The move faced severe backlash and ultimately had to be reversed . 

This time around, T-Mobile appears to have been more careful:  not forcing customers to pay the price of an unsolicited upgrade, while also providing them with more clarity. 

Customers will be given a heads-up at least 14 days before anything changes, T-Mobile says. Additionally, those on a price-locked plan won't be affected. "The customers being moved here are not on Price Lock plans, and Price Lock remains in place for eligible customers," the carrier tells Android Authority.

Your perks aren't going away, either. "Your free lines, discounts, streaming perks, and any other benefits you enjoy today will move with you to Go5G Plus," T-Mobile says. 

The carrier, however, is yet to provide a way to opt out of this free transition. We have reached out to T-Mobile for more details regarding this. 

For some legacy customers, though, this could be their second big change this year, following April's $5-per-line price hike .
