A satellite company that can already see floodwater as it happens is now adding the ability to predict where that water is headed next. ICEYE announced a partnership with The Water Institute to bring FloodID, the Louisiana-based nonprofit's predictive flood modeling platform, into ICEYE's existing satellite-based flood intelligence system.

The deal brings FloodID's core development team into ICEYE alongside the technology itself. That expands the company's flood intelligence offerings for governments, insurers, and emergency management organizations across the United States.

Watching, then predicting

ICEYE currently supports decision-makers through several stages of a flood event. Its Flood Early Warning system combines global weather forecasts, basin susceptibility data, and historical satellite observations. Together, those inputs give agencies and insurers up to 96 hours of advance notice before flooding begins.

Once a flood is underway, ICEYE's SAR satellite constellation delivers near real-time intelligence that cuts through cloud cover, heavy rain, and darkness. That data feeds Flood Rapid Impact and Flood Insights products, which show flood extent, water depth, and building-level damage within hours of an event.

FloodID adds a different layer entirely. Developed at The Water Institute , the platform combines physics-based hydrologic modeling, physics-guided artificial intelligence, satellite data, and cloud computing. Together, those pieces model how a flood is likely to evolve from onset through recession, rather than simply observing what has already happened.

Self-updating forecast

Pairing FloodID's predictive modeling with ICEYE's satellite observations creates what the companies call an observation-informed forecast. That prediction continually updates as new satellite data arrives during an active event. Rather than relying on a single forecast set at the outset, the combined system tracks flooding as it evolves in real time.

Will Panchaud, ICEYE's senior director of product solutions, said FloodID strengthens the company's predictive capability while preserving the observed flood intelligence customers already rely on. Hugh Roberts, who previously led FloodID at The Water Institute, is joining ICEYE as head of predictive intelligence to run go-to-market efforts for that side of the business.

Born from Louisiana's floods

FloodID originated as a tool for Louisiana emergency managers. It was built specifically to put localized, faster flood information into the hands of people making high-stakes decisions. The platform has since expanded into operational use and pilot programs with government agencies across multiple regions beyond its home state.

The Water Institute's president and CEO, Beaux Jones, said the ICEYE partnership gives that Louisiana-born innovation a chance to reach more communities. That reach matters most at moments when better information can make the biggest difference.

Amazon disaster relief technology lead Jeffrey Schweitzer said flooding has grown harder to predict in recent years. He cited atmospheric rivers dropping 30 inches of rain, storm surge colliding with inland flooding, and increasingly frequent thousand-year flood events across multiple US states.

The partnership runs on Amazon Web Services infrastructure and was supported through an Amazon grant. ICEYE said the combined system now supports decision-making across the full arc of a flood event, from preparation before it starts to recovery once the water recedes.
