Meta adds a human-authentication badge

Meta has announced Facebook Verified, an optional badge for Facebook users that confirms a profile belongs to a real person through a face-scan process. The system arrives alongside Meta's launch of a new Facebook Seller app for iPhone and gives users another signal to judge whether a profile is backed by an actual human.

The badge resembles a checkmark. It is free. Meta frames the feature as a response to AI-generated activity across profiles, content, and messages, where the identity behind an account can become harder to assess at a glance.

"As AI makes it easier to generate content, profiles, and messages, we want to provide a way for you to know there is a real person on the other side of a profile," Meta said in its announcement. "That's why we're introducing Facebook Verified, a free badge for people on Facebook."

The process uses a video selfie

Facebook Verified requires facial verification before the badge appears on a profile. Based on screenshots, the setup flow looks similar to Apple's Face ID enrollment process on iPhone, though the Facebook version is used to compare a user's live submission against existing profile photos.

That makes the system more involved than a standard email or phone confirmation. It also makes Facebook Verified a more visible marker inside Meta's social network, because the badge is designed to appear where user identity carries practical weight.

Where the badge appears

Once a user is approved, the Facebook Verified badge displays in several areas of the service. Those placements include the user's Profile, Marketplace, Dating, and Groups.

Feed placement is coming later. Meta said the badge will also be added to posts in the Feed, expanding the visibility of human verification beyond profile pages and transactional or community spaces.

The Marketplace placement is especially relevant for users who rely on Facebook for local buying and selling, where account trust can affect whether people respond to listings or messages. The Dating and Groups placements carry a similar logic, since those areas depend heavily on person-to-person interaction rather than passive content consumption.

Eligibility starts at 18

Facebook Verified is optional, and users must be at least 18 years old to qualify. Accounts also need to be in good standing with Facebook's Community Standards.

The feature therefore sits apart from paid subscription verification products associated with creator identity or account prominence. Based on Meta's description, Facebook Verified is positioned as a free human-authentication badge rather than a status product.

The rollout also shows how mainstream platforms are moving identity checks into everyday social surfaces as AI-generated profiles and messages become easier to produce. Facebook is making the badge visible across the parts of the platform where trust most directly affects interaction, then pushing it into Feed posts at a later stage.

For users, the decision is straightforward in one sense and more complicated in another. The badge gives others a clear signal that the profile has passed Meta's face-based verification process. The tradeoff is that earning that signal requires submitting a short video selfie for comparison against profile photos.

Facebook Verified turns human confirmation into a visible platform feature. Meta's announcement makes clear that the company wants that signal to become part of how users evaluate profiles across Facebook's core social, commerce, dating, and group experiences.
