Shortly after TikTok transitioned its U.S. arm to fall under complete U.S. ownership, U.S.-based users started to report disruptions with the app.
Many U.S. users said the app was “broken” as they found it difficult to upload videos, with uploads marked “under review” that have not yet gone live, according to The Verge.
Here’s what you need to know about when the TikTok outage started to happen, what problems people were experiencing and what caused the outage.
When did the TikTok outage start and what were the problems people experienced?
According to DownDetector , many of the issues started around Sunday morning but are still persisting.
About 61% of users reported problems with the app, while 21% reported problems with their feed and timeline. An additional 17% couldn’t access the app at all, DownDetector reported.
Tom’s Guide found that the issues mostly affected content creators rather than viewers of content.
What caused TikTok to go down?
TikTok’s U.S. joint venture told Tom’s Guide that the issue stems from a “power outage at a U.S. data center impacting TikTok.”
The issues many people have reported started after TikTok updated its terms of service.
As of last week, TikTok transferred ownership to an investment consortium of companies that include Larry Ellison’s Oracle, according to The Verge.
The transfer in ownership was a long-awaited solution to the U.S. government’s threat to ban the app while it was still under Chinese control.
The new owners now control U.S. content moderation, which had sparked concerns about potential censorship before the outage occurred.
The app’s algorithm will also be retrained to be based on U.S. data, according to The Verge.
