Once upon a time, blocking someone meant that they were completely wiped from your feed. You’d never see their posts, and they’d never see yours.
Unfortunately, that is seemingly no longer the case on X (formerly Twitter). As of late, many users have reported that they’re seeing content from accounts they blocked.
“Why are people who have me blocked showing up in my feed?” posed one user. Another penned : “If an account has me blocked I shouldn’t be forced to look at their s---.”
A third sarcastically wrote : “I love how twitter will put tweets on your tl from people who have you blocked. does this app even work?”
“Why is the X algorithm giving me posts from accounts that have me blocked? These aren’t big accounts or viral posts or topics I’m engaged in. It’s just pointless and weird,” posted a fourth.
The topic generated over 10,000 posts, with users claiming they could see content from blocked accounts and vice versa. Some even reported that blocked users could still “like” or reply to their tweets.
These users are telling the truth. But what exactly is going on?
This shift began in May 2024, when X intentionally tweaked the mechanics of the block feature. The official X Engineering account shared the following statement .
“We are making changes to how block works. If a user who has blocked you replies to one of your posts, you will now be able to see their reply. This change enables you to identify and report any potential bad content that you previously could not view, safeguarding both your account and the overall integrity of our platform,” read the statement.
The platform seemingly implemented these changes on purpose to curb abuse. Under the old system, if someone blocked you and then proceeded to slander or impersonate you, you would have no way of knowing. This change would combat that.
Still, at the time of this update, users were questioning the approach. “Confused. Why can someone i blocked see or interact with my posts? What’s the point of blocking then?” asked one person.
It remains unclear whether the full weight of these changes is just now hitting the general user base, or if a more recent algorithmic update has caused an uptick in blocked users appearing in one’s feed. What is clear is that seeing a blocked user in your feed isn’t a glitch. It’s an intentional move by the platform.
As of publication, it appears that if you block a user on X, they won’t appear in your “Following” feed, and they cannot DM you. However, you may still encounter their posts in the wild on your “For You” page. Interestingly, if you visit their profile, their posts will remain hidden from view.
