Spotify will label AI artists, avoid promoting their profiles

( NewsNation ) — With AI-generated songs taking social media by storm and even topping charts, Spotify is letting users know when they are listening to real people.

In a news release , the music and podcast streaming giant announced it would start putting labels on the profiles of artists it believes makes AI-generated music, which will show up in a badge on the profile labeled "AI Persona."

Spotify said once a profile has been identified as such, it will then work to exclude them from the company's editorial and algorithmic recommendations.

"While we believe all artists have creative choice in determining how they present themselves," Spotify wrote in the news release, "Spotify's programming is focused on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music."

The move comes after users began calling for the app to make distinctions of when a profile makes AI music. A band called the Velvet Sundown got more than one million streams on Spotify, but it was later discovered that everything about the band was AI-generated, from its music to the band's backstory, according to a report from The Guardian.
