Netflix has become one of, if not the most influential, streaming services around, with its constantly updated library of titles, originals, and live events. But the company's investment in new content comes at a price for subscribers, and the streamer's prices are now as high as $27 per month, higher than almost any other plan that doesn't also offer a live TV component.

Fortunately, Netflix makes canceling a plan incredibly simple, and it also lets you pause your account for up to 3 months if you just need some time off. How to cancel Netflix

If you subscribe to Netflix directly, head to your account page, click Manage Membership, click "Cancel," and then, when prompted, click "Finish Cancellation." If you cancel with time left in your billing period, you can keep using Netflix until the end of that period.

If you subscribe to Netflix through your wireless carrier, cable service, or another provider, contact your carrier or provider directly for support. That information will be linked to your Netflix account page. You'll need to log in to your third-party account to manage your add-ons or membership from there.

How to pause a Netflix subscription

Many streaming services let customers pause their subscriptions, effectively putting a hold on their plan and prorating their payments so they can temporarily save a few bucks, then easily opt back in when they're ready. This is a great way to cut back if you don't mind going without for a while. While Netflix does allow customers to pause accounts, there are a few exceptions, including those who pay with a debit or gift card or through certain third-party partners. To pause your Netflix account, you can pause it for 1 month at a time, up to 3 months total. To do so, log into your account page and click "Cancel Membership." You can then select "Pause for 1 Month." Your account will automatically unpause after a month, unless you go back in and select the option to extend the pause for an additional month.

Netflix is one of the few streaming services that don't offer a student discount (or any discounts for that matter), nor do they offer free trials. And since their crackdown on password sharing, there's really only one way for anyone to get a reduced rate directly through the platform: as an add-on to an existing subscription. That means that anyone not living in the same household as a primary subscriber, whether it's a student, grandparent, friend, or anyone else, can be added to an existing subscription plan for $6.99/month for a plan with ads or $8.99/month for a plan without ads. Standard Plan subscribers may add one additional person to their account, while Premium subscribers can add up to two.
