We all know Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, but if you still look at him and see the titular wizard, you should explore his later work and really get a taste of the range and versatility that make him the stand-out actor he is. Lucky for you, I've got the perfect place to start, and it's with the thriller-adventure movie Jungle , currently streaming on Prime Video ... but not for long.

The 2017 film is a biographical survival drama based on the true story of Yossi Ghinsberg's 1981 journey into the Bolivian Amazon rainforest. The Israeli adventurer remained lost for weeks and nearly died before a last-minute, final-glimpse-over-the-shoulder resulted in his rescue. In addition to its epic cinematography, Radcliffe's performance in this unbelievable tale of will, faith, survival, and friendship is so convincing and impressive, it grips you by the soul and doesn't let go.

Simply put, Radcliffe is outstanding, and so is Jungle .

The Rainforest is Unforgiving

Jungle follows 22-year-old Yossi Ghinsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), who has just completed his mandatory military service and now seeks adventure backpacking through South America. While staying at an Israeli community hostel in Bolivia, he meets Marcus Stamm (Joel Jackson), a Swiss school teacher, and Stamm's friend Kevin Gale (Alex Russell), an American hiker and avid photographer.

When a shady Austrian stranger, Karl Ruprechter (Thomas Kretschmann), claims to have knowledge of hidden gold and the existence of an indigenous tribe in the jungle, he offers to take the group, claiming to be friends with the tribe. While Yossi is excited about the prospect of exploring uncharted territory, his new friends question Karl's motives.

Still, they embark, and their journey quickly turns into a terrifying ordeal as Karl's lack of experience quickly surfaces. Moreover, Marcus gets a nasty foot infection, and the group must split up to return to civilization. While Marcus and Karl head back on foot, Yossi and Kevin continue on a makeshift raft. However, after a catastrophic accident, Yossi finds himself separated and alone. The darkest elements of human nature and the deadliest threats of the wild settle in as he fights for survival, stranded without a knife or map, with no survival training.

Yossi's struggle to stay alive is what you must see to believe, from his improvised shelter and foraging efforts to his battle with foot rot and more. His journey is a harrowing psychological and physical test of faith and fortitude—and it's all true.

Radcliffe Steals the Spotlight

Yossi Ghinsberg's experience is harrowing for sure, and if his story is the heart of our narrative, then Daniel Radcliffe's performance is the emotion that brings this true story to life.

His displayed sense of terror helps build the movie's suspense and heighten our interest in Yossi's fight for survival, thus going one step further to emotionally invest us in this story. Radcliffe admirably throws himself into embodying not just Yossi's personality but also his unraveling psyche, growing frustration, and inspiring will to survive, and he does this so effortlessly that it is he who winds up carrying the weight of the film. He becomes the epitome of an adventurous kid who finds himself way in over his head, facing the reality that his decision could cost him his life before it ever really gets started.

Radcliffe's portrayal as a once-healthy young man-turned-weak, emaciated skeleton dragging himself through the jungle brush screaming for help is remarkable and will, at times, have you holding your breath, covering your eyes, then exhaling in dramatic relief as you wipe the tears from your eyes. It's a performance you won't ever forget, and thanks to that, Jungle is a story you won't either.

The True Story Behind Jungle

While Jungle does a solid job at adapting Yossi Ghinsberg's book, there are some discrepancies.

The book focuses more on Yossi's internal psychological journey of self-discovery, whereas the film spotlights the fear, external dangers, and immediate survival aspects of the adventurer's harrowing ordeal. The film also portrays Karl's mysterious nature, suspicious actions, and perhaps darker intentions more intensely, and as a central mystery, allowing that to overshadow our main story at hand. To this day, his intentions are unknown.

Furthermore, details about Karl's true identity were brushed over in the film. Once Gale was rescued, he pleaded to the Israeli and Austrian consulates for help in preparing rescue missions for Yossi, Marcus, and Karl. He was told by authorities at the Austrian consulate that Karl was not a geologist; he was a wanted criminal by Interpol.

What happened to Karl and Marcus remains a mystery to this day. Yossi said in his book that he thought a falling tree might have killed them in a storm or that Karl had succumbed to an accident, and both men had died as Marcus would have been unable to get out of the jungle unaided.

If I can offer one piece of advice, it's to eat something before you partake in this head-spinner of a film. What Yossi endures and must contend with to survive is not pretty, and some scenes will require a strong stomach.
