Just Add an Email? Netflix Makes It Even Harder to Share an Account

If you've been unable to access your Netflix profile in the last week or so, it's likely because of the streamer's new sign-in requirement.

As of June 15, all Netflix profiles now require their own email address, the company confirmed to Ars Technica. If you sign in and tap a secondary profile, a pop-up will appear asking for a separate email. "Add an email address to your profile for easier sign-in access, to recover your account, get personalized suggestions and more," Netflix says in the pop-up.

The change means you can still access a Netflix account using the primary holder's login credentials and profile. To create or access a separate profile, however, you'll need to provide a dedicated email address. Netflix supports up to five individual profiles per account, which helps people in a household keep their watch histories and recommendations separate.

However, Netflix has been cracking down on account sharing for several years now. There are some workarounds , but in general, if it detects you are away from your primary household, it will ask for a login code or lock you out entirely. The move is intended to boost the number of legit Netflix accounts, and the streamer has seen an uptick in people opting for its ad-supported tier since the crackdown began. However, it can be annoying if you're traveling, have a vacation home, or want to share an account with kids at college, for example.

There is an upside to the latest move, though. Each profile created with a dedicated email can now have its own language, audio, and display preferences, Cord Cutter News notes . Speaking of audio, a California law requiring streaming platforms to play ads and their own content at the same volume takes effect this week, on July 1.

After updating its TV interface last year, Netflix refreshed its mobile app interface in April and added a vertical video feed for content discovery called Clips.
