Love Terminator 2? PlayStation Network Deletes 500+ Movies for UK Users

If you're based in the UK and have ever bought movies via the PlayStation Store, you could be in for some bad news.

UK users have reportedly been receiving emails from Sony informing them that movies in their libraries distributed by French studio StudioCanal are set to be deleted by Sept. 1. Sony cited only "content licensing" as the reason behind the change.

Roughly 551 titles are set to be deleted, including Terminator 2: Judgment Day , Total Recall , Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut , and Moonlight . You can check out the full list of titles here . The email to customers, first spotted by Kotaku, makes no mention of refunds.

US users aren't currently impacted by the announcement, but this isn't the first time we've seen Sony delete users' content en masse. Sony removed StudioCanal movies for German and Austrian users in 2022, again citing licensing disputes. US PlayStation users have also had close calls with their content before, such as when Sony announced it would remove Discovery content from the platform in 2023 before later signing a new licensing deal .

Some customers on social media are understandably displeased by the news, with users on sites like Reddit promoting physical copies as the best way to permanently own media.

Other users referenced the ongoing controversy surrounding GTA VI's digital-only release , which has drawn criticism and disappointment from some quarters. For example, Video Games Plus, an independent games retailer, has refused to stock the game in the interests of "preserving the value of physical game ownership." Loot Box Gaming, another independent games store, made a similar announcement.

The issue of ownership among gamers has gained momentum in recent years, with groups like "Stop Killing Games" collecting over one million signatures on a petition aimed at forcing the EU to require gaming companies to keep games playable. Some lawyers have critiqued the group's requests, dubbing the demand "unreasonable," citing issues like constant maintenance.

Sony stopped selling and renting movies through the Store back in 2021 , citing consumer preferences shifting toward users using streaming services via their consoles.
