Netflix’s Grand Theft Auto 6 Experiment Shattered Streaming Records

It's been a few days since Netflix debuted the first gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto 6 . On August 27th, the streamer aired Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look , which was delightfully straightforward. No hosts, no elaborate opening, it was over 30 straight minutes of gameplay. In practice, it felt like the old-school cable channel, G4 , except that, unlike the doomed cable channel, Netflix set streaming records with its bold gaming experiment. Days later, and the special is still Number 2 on the Netflix Top Ten, and on Thursday, it managed to increase Netflix viewership by 125 percent.

All Gameplay, No Fluff

The 26-minute special is considered a film in the streamer's catalog, and it's likely that no game, ever, will be able to bring in an audience as big as Grand Theft Auto 6 . Avengers: Doomsday isn't even the largest media release this year. That's how big Rockstar's flagship series has become. On web browsers, Netflix's typical Thursday viewer numbers were eclipsed by 125 percent, and on mobile devices, 75 percent. Put it together, and Netflix managed to triple its usual audience numbers.

Rendered off a base model PlayStation 5, Grand Theft Auto 6 looked unbelievable in motion. Six years into the PlayStation 5/Xbox generation, we're seeing a new graphical benchmark thanks to the return to Vice City. The sun-drenched fiction version of Miami was the setting of the Miami Vice influenced Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002. In the present, the return to the city is instead drawing inspiration from Bonnie and Clyde .

Jason And Lucia Take Vice City

Players can play as Jason Duval (according to Jacksonville natives, it's pronounced DU-VAAAL!) or Lucia Camos, switching off for different story segments as players can either further their romance or ignore it altogether. Depending on your diet, they can even gain weight, and depending on your choices, you might get different dialogue. Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look looked like it could be the next Michael Mann, or Michael Bay , movie given how it switched from cutscenes to stunning gameplay.

There's no explanation given to any of the game mechanics, but in the last few days, Rockstar devs have given countless interviews to different outlets explaining the new 6-star Wanted System that tracks if the cops recognize your car, face, or outfits. A brief shot of scuba diving hints at going beneath the surface of the water for the first time in franchise history. Base jumping returns, racing, knocking off stores, evading cops with a social media influencer hanging out of your trunk, basketball, you know, the typical Grand Theft Auto minigames.

Bigger Than Avengers: Doomsday

Once Netflix's 6-hour exclusive window was closed, the gameplay footage rang up over 10 million views on YouTube alone. Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming out on November 19. There is no major video game release within weeks of the game's launch date, and even movies have stayed clear, with The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping attempting to counter-program the stranglehold that the massive open world game will have on everyone.

It's already set streaming records for the largest streaming service in the world, and when Grand Theft Auto 6 hits stores, it will shatter every video game related record.
