The Netflix GTA VI Extended Look Passes 31.1 Million Views in Four Days

Leading up to August 27th, there was a lot of talk about how it was pointless for Netflix to pay for six hours of exclusivity , but it seems the streaming giant made a smart move. The extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI became Netflix's most-viewed title last week.

From August 27th to August 20th the preview racked up more than 31.1 million views. It is still the seventh most-watched movie on the service as of today. It was the number one English-language film in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks.

These stats are even more impressive when you consider that, leading up to the extended look, a leaker showed off clips from an earlier build of the game. The leaker, who goes by the moniker CyberLeek, showed points of interest like a strip club and featured clips of them fighting NPCs. If anything, the leak built hype for the actual extended look. Many people, myself included, were eagerly anticipating a legitimate look at a game we've been waiting more than a decade for.

The extended look also gained traction because the game looks really good. That wasn't something that fans were too worried about; Rockstar is coming off GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 , both considered some of the finest games of their generation. However, since the developer had been mostly radio silent about the game's details, we made sure to be there when it went live on Netflix.

Netflix has begun to dabble in video games of late. You can play games through their service on your phone. These range from mobile-like puzzle games to sports games like FIFA World Cup Launch Edition and a new horror game called Unhinged . The extended look is just the latest way Netflix has tried to diversify its offerings.

I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix and game developers are in talks to show off their games on the streamer. The GTA VI extended look was very successful, but is that just because the game is so anticipated, or is this something that can be replicated? We'll have to wait and see, but for now Netflix can enjoy the fact that their risk paid off.
