One of YouTube's Handiest Features Just Stopped Working

YouTube is investigating a picture-in-picture failure affecting users on iPhone and Android. The issue stops PiP from activating when users exit the YouTube app, preventing the expected floating video player from appearing on the home screen or over another app.

The broken behavior is straightforward and disruptive for viewers who rely on PiP as part of normal mobile viewing. Instead of shrinking the active video into a movable corner window, YouTube exits the visible playback experience entirely while audio continues in the background. That leaves users with sound but no floating video, which defeats the core function of PiP on both iOS and Android.

Google said some users are "experiencing issues with the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature failing to trigger when exiting the YouTube app." The company also said the "vast majority of these reports are coming from iOS users," while acknowledging that some Android devices are affected as well.

iPhone reports dominate, but Android is not clear

The problem appears more concentrated on iPhone than Android based on Google's own statement. That distinction matters because it indicates the issue is not necessarily universal across all supported mobile hardware, even though both major mobile platforms are represented in the reports.

For users, the practical effect is the same regardless of platform: closing the YouTube app no longer reliably launches PiP. The normal expectation is that the video continues in a small floating player while the user moves elsewhere in the operating system. In the current failure state described by Google, the video portion disappears and the session continues only as background audio.

YouTube first identified the issue on Friday morning PT. As of Saturday afternoon, the report said there was no progress update. Google's public message remains that "teams are actively investigating the issue," and the company added, "Thank you for your patience while we work to get this resolved!"

The timing is awkward for free PiP expansion

The outage lands after YouTube started rolling out PiP for free users around the world earlier this year. That broader rollout made the feature more visible to users who previously may not have treated PiP as part of their daily YouTube workflow. A bug that removes the floating player experience therefore affects a larger audience than it would have before that expansion.

For home-entertainment and mobile-viewing users, PiP is not a headline feature in the same class as a new TV panel, streaming bundle, or soundbar launch, but it directly shapes how YouTube fits into multitasking. Viewers use it to keep a music video, commentary stream, tutorial, or long-form clip active while browsing, messaging, or checking other apps. When PiP fails, YouTube's mobile experience shifts from video-first multitasking to audio-only background playback.

YouTube has not provided a fix timeline. The most concrete next step is to monitor the YouTube Help thread referenced in the report for updates from Google. Until the company ships or confirms a resolution, affected users should expect PiP behavior to remain inconsistent, especially on iOS where the majority of reports are coming from.

The issue does not appear to stop videos from playing entirely. It specifically breaks the PiP handoff that should occur when exiting the YouTube app. That distinction narrows the scope, but it does not soften the impact for viewers who depend on floating playback as a core part of how they use YouTube on mobile devices.
