Spotify Adds User Notes for Personal Song Captions

Spotify has introduced a feature called User Notes that lets listeners attach written captions to individual songs within playlists they have curated. The addition offers a manual, personal counterpoint to the personalization Spotify has long promised through its algorithm, giving users a way to annotate their music directly rather than relying on automated recommendations alone.

What User Notes Do

The captions serve as small text annotations tied to each track in a curated playlist. A note might remind you where you first heard a particular song or who introduced you to the artist. For playlists built to share with someone else, the notes function as a form of digital liner notes, letting the creator explain the sequence or context behind each selection. The comparison to a mixtape or mix CD from earlier eras is imperfect, but the feature carries a similar spirit of personal curation within the modern playlist format.

Availability and Access

User Notes are open to listeners who are at least 16 years old, and the feature works on both paid and free plans. Availability is currently limited to select markets rather than rolling out globally. Listeners can add a caption through the three-dot menu next to a track listing, where an "Add note" option appears.

One point worth noting for anyone planning to share a curated playlist: the notes are visible to anyone who can view that playlist.

A Manual Layer on Top of the Algorithm

Spotify has built much of its identity around algorithmic personalization, surfacing tracks and playlists based on listening behavior. User Notes moves in a different direction by handing control back to the listener, letting people describe and contextualize their own selections in their own words. The feature does not replace the platform's automated systems, but it adds a human, hand-written layer that those systems cannot replicate. For users who came up on the tradition of writing track listings on the back of a cassette insert, the appeal is straightforward.

The rollout reflects a broader interest in features that make streaming feel more personal and shareable rather than purely consumption-driven. A caption attached to a song can turn a playlist into a small piece of communication between the creator and whoever receives it, which is a use case the algorithm alone does not address.
