HBO Max is getting a price cut for Verizon subscribers

In a rare piece of good news for streaming subscribers, HBO Max is actually getting cheaper for certain Verizon customers who currently use the service as an add-on perk. Seeing a price cut in the streaming world is almost unheard of these days, but this price cut is rolling out now.

This unexpected discount applies specifically to customers who have HBO Max through an existing Verizon subscription, usually tied to a mobile or home internet plan like Fios or 5G Home. If you are one of the lucky people paying the difference to upgrade to the ad-free Premium tier, you're about to save a few bucks.

Previously, some customers paying for this upgrade were shelling out around $15 per month for the premium service. Starting mid-December, that cost is dropping to just $12 per month. That might sound like a small change, but in the context of endless price increases, I would say this is a top-tier feature for loyal Verizon subscribers.

The key benefit here is accessing the Premium subscription tier. If you subscribe directly to HBO Max, that tier is currently priced at $22.99 per month. The Premium tier is essential for anyone who cares about picture quality, because it comes with 4K content. For Verizon customers, paying just $12 extra effectively makes the 4K upgrade incredibly affordable.

Funnily enough, the Premium discount perfectly covers the gap between the standard HBO Max plan and the 4K tier, which suggests Verizon managed to negotiate a fantastic deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to cover that specific upgrade cost entirely.

What makes this discount even more impressive is that HBO Max recently announced its own price hikes. The ad-supported tier went up by $1, and the Premium tier went up by $2. Despite these increases from the service provider itself, Verizon is still honoring the underlying discount, making the savings even better for those using the carrier's perks.

The most common way to access these savings is through Verizon's "Netflix + HBO Max" bundle, which costs $10 per month for the ad-supported versions. If you don't need Netflix, PCWorld reports there is also a standalone HBO Max ad-supported plan available for $7.50 a month. However, the bundle typically comes with the ad-supported version of both services, and customers pay the difference to upgrade. It's rare to see a streaming company offer better value, especially for a feature like 4K viewing, but this deal lets existing Verizon customers enjoy HBO Max Premium for a fraction of the standard price.

For example, some subscribers who signed up for 5G Home internet were even getting the ad-supported HBO Max and Netflix for free for a year as part of a promotion. They then paid the difference for the Premium plans. This $12 price is the resulting cost of that HBO Max Premium upgrade after Verizon applies its substantial credit.

I wouldn't recommend switching to Verizon just to get this deal, but if you are already invested in the Verizon ecosystem with a mobile or home internet package, this is for you. You should check your account for this discount or call customer service to find out how to apply it to your plan.
