That's real money, compounded every month. Reports from Dexerto indicate subscribers in Finland and elsewhere are already canceling in response — which suggests the math isn't landing in YouTube's favor for everyone.

YouTube's stated rationale: the hike will "allow us to continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube." Every platform deploys a version of this line. Netflix said something similar before the password-sharing crackdown, and Spotify Wrapped arrives annually — so, apparently, does the price increase nobody asked for. The creator-support framingis notably hard to verify; no prominent creator voices have publicly endorsed the increase, which leaves YouTube's justification resting almost entirely on its own word.
