On March 24, Mozilla will roll out Firefox 149 , which will bring a free, built-in VPN‑style tool and a native split‑screen mode to the browser. The VPN will route Firefox traffic through remote servers, so websites see the server's IP address instead of yours. Reports say the free tier will include a 50GB monthly data cap.

Initially, the built-in VPN will be available only to users in the US, UK, France, and Germany. Mozilla may then expand access after it assesses performance and demand. The tool will exist within Firefox itself, so there's no need to download a separate extension or app. Mozilla will also keep it separate from its paid Mozilla VPN service, which will still handle full‑device traffic, not just browser traffic.

Firefox 149 will also introduce a built‑in Split View mode that lets users place two sites side‑by‑side in a single window, similar to what Google Chrome recently deployed . Finally, the update will include tools like Tab Notes and an optional Smart Window that can use AI to summarize pages.
