A decade has passed since an Italian, Vincenzo Nibali, last won the general classification, and Pellizzari, who finished sixth in both the Giro and Vuelta last year, can count not only on the support of the locals, but his Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe teammate Jai Hindley too.

The Australian won the Giro in 2022, and returned to form with an impressive fourth at the Vuelta last year. Adam Yates, meanwhile, is out to emulate his twin brother Simon Yates, who surged to victory by seizing the lead on the penultimate stage 12 months ago. Adam is yet to win a Grand Tour in 16 attempts, but he's had seven top-10 and two top-five finishes. This will be the UAE Team Emirates XRG man's third crack at the Giro.
