Therabot Review: Great Recovery, But Is It Ready for Prime Time?

It's official: triathlon technology has entered its next era of futuristic gadgets with this recovery device that looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie.
The Therabot robotic massager aims to eliminate some of the inconsistency and inconvenience of traditional massage recovery; for instance, instead of finding a suitable time and place to foam roll or manually working a massage gun across tired legs, the Therabot, after the push of a few buttons, simply moves up and down the leg on its own while adjusting its fit and pressure along the way.
Inventor Aaron Aders initially built the device to help a friend who experienced frequent leg discomfort and needed hands-on treatment whenever the pain appeared. He now believes the Therabot can offer one of the closest alternatives to hands-on massage, built around the idea that recovery should be relaxing, effortless, and repeatable.
We got our hands on a pre-release prototype to see whether the Aders has brought about the future of recovery, or whether you should save the $500-plus expense and get a human massage instead.
What is the Therabot?
The Therabot is a hands-free automated rolling device that travels up and down either your entire leg or a specific section of it. Its rollers and motors automatically adjust to the contours and size of your leg, applying pressure to the muscles as the device moves.
It measures 8.5 inches in diameter fully closed and weighs just over three pounds. That makes it relatively compact for what it does, although it is still a substantial device to carry in a travel bag.
As of now, a $499 preorder gets you the base Therabot model we tested, along with one year of premium app features. We were not able to test those premium features, but judging by the company's website, they could include personalized AI tools, treatment recommendations, and recovery guidance. There is also a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 1-year warranty.
How it works

Everything is controlled through the Therabot app. Before the first session, you complete a body scan that the device saves to map the correct distances for traveling up and down the leg.
From there, the user chooses between several modes based on treatment preference and location – including the calf, thigh, or a full-leg pass. The app also allows the user to adjust the intensity, speed, and duration before the Therabot works its magic until the timer runs out.
Physically, the device uses two sets of motors. One controls the large circular ring, allowing it to contract and expand as it moves along different parts of the leg. The other controls three massage rollers that move the device up and down.
Sensors underneath the rollers then work with an algorithm to determine how much pressure should be applied based on the position and shape of the leg, and what settings you have chosen.

Once it gets going, the Therabot is truly hands-free – and it simply feels great. It does not get as deep as you could with a stiff foam roller, something like the Roll Recovery device, or a deep-tissue massage. However, it still gets more than deep enough for most recovery sessions.
Even as someone who likes massages to be borderline eye-watering, I often found myself hovering around an intensity of eight or nine out of 10 for recovery. Before workouts, an intensity of around five or six provided enough pressure to get the legs and blood flow moving without leaving the muscles feeling overly worked.
The three rollers cover a surprisingly large surface area. It was a noticeable win versus my typical habit of overworking one small area at a time with a foam roller or massage gun, and then neglecting other areas – as the Therabot can apply constant pressure across several parts of the leg at once. It makes the massage experience feel efficient, particularly when using the full-leg setting.
I was initially worried about how the rollers would feel near the Achilles, ankle, and knee. However, the sensors did their job without hesitation, reducing the pressure and navigating those more sensitive areas delicately. When I allowed others to try, this was always one of their biggest positive impressions.
The app is very user-friendly once the initial setup is complete. Starting a session is as simple as powering on the device, choosing a mode, positioning it on the leg, and pressing the start button. Adjusting the speed, duration, and intensity is similarly straightforward.
At first, it was not immediately clear that a body scan needed to be completed before the first session (I might have been just too eager to try it out); however, once that was done, the mapping was surprisingly accurate. The Therabot generally stopped before reaching the ankle or traveling too high toward the groin – provided the device was positioned correctly at the beginning of the session. We will get to that caveat shortly.
A nice bonus is that the app can save multiple body scans, allowing several people to share the same Therabot without repeating the setup process each time.
Battery life was never an issue, and charging was impressively fast. The website claims around two hours of continuous use, but my testing put it closer to two-and-a-half to three hours.
The materials also feel premium and durable. You can tell the device was designed with care and built to withstand being tossed into a triathlete's travel bag or bike case at the last minute.
We tested it without the additional roller attachments that will be available for different massage depths and styles. Imagineably, being able to swap those rollers should give users more control over the pressure and type of massage they receive, which we wished we were able to have.

The first thing you notice about the Therabot is the sound.
From the moment the device starts, it produces a very distinctive noise as the motors adjust the size of the ring and move the device up and down the leg. It is not necessarily loud. It is just very robotic and squeaky. Even though it has an "Airplane" mode, you would never catch me wearing one on a plane or in the boarding area with this thing squeaking away. The sound improves considerably at slower speeds, but the faster the Therabot moves, the more noticeable it becomes. Even on the slowest setting, using it while watching a show with my wife usually earned me a side-eye that said, "Are you really using that now?"
I became more accustomed to the noise over time, and it was not an issue while wearing headphones, working, or reading. Still, it limits where and when I would realistically want to use the device.
There were also several app and software issues during testing. Some of these are understandable for a product that is still in beta, but they are worth mentioning:

It took several attempts to save our initial body-profile scan. Then, for an unknown reason, the app repeatedly ended sessions after exactly five minutes. This was quickly addressed through a firmware update when we mentioned it to the Aders.

Pressure consistency was mostly without issue, but varied depending on the session type and the position of the rollers. At times, an intensity of 10 felt lighter than normal, while during other sessions, the same setting required an immediate stop. Certain modes, particularly the trigger-point and compression settings, also felt like they were applying pressure inconsistently and did not appear to work as intended.

On a few occasions, the device appeared to have a mind of its own. Even after completing the body scan, it could travel farther up or down the leg depending on whether I was lying down or sitting at a desk, how my leg was angled, and where the device was positioned at the beginning of the session. Thankfully, safety is a key consideration of the product, and it auto-shuts off if it senses that it is wrongly positioned or applying too much pressure, and it can be stopped instantly via the app.

Whenever the Therabot traveled too far in one direction, I immediately wished there were a button in the app or on the device that could tell it to reverse movement. Currently, the main control in the app only allows you to end the session, which feels like a missed opportunity.

Similarly, more manual controls on the Therabot itself would be welcome. Like a massage gun, I would like to be able to set the intensity directly on the device, select the calf or thigh, and begin a session without needing to open my phone. Opening an app and navigating through menus is not always what I want to do immediately before or after a workout.
According to the company, an option to use the Therabot without the app will be available when the device launches in late September. Pressing the button on the device will automatically begin the most recently selected session. That is a welcome addition, although I would still like to see more complete manual control without the app.
Another noticeable limitation is the specific positioning required to use the Therabot effectively, especially during a full-leg pass. It works best while lying down with the leg elevated or while sitting toward the edge of a chair. You cannot use it while walking around, and unlike compression boots, it does not work particularly well while completely reclined. That limits some of the freedom you might expect from a device marketed as hands-free.
Finally, although the three rollers cover plenty of ground, there were moments when I wished it had one more. Sometimes, the rollers would surround the sore area without one of them landing directly on the spot I wanted to target... cue pausing the session, readjusting the device, and then restarting the treatment.
Overall, mostly relatively small inconveniences, but with a device this expensive ($500 is actually the lowest base model price, and it's discounted for preorder), it's right to expect a premium user experience.
Therabot review: Bottom line
For a completely new product concept and category, the Therabot is impressive. Even in its pre-release state, it feels like a device that could eventually have a genuine place in the recovery market.
For me, it already makes sense for someone with limited mobility or an athlete who values hands-free convenience and wants to simultaneously work, read, or relax while receiving a massage. Of course, that comes with a considerable price.
If you find its capabilities save you even an hour a week of foam rolling and other self-massage – or even a couple of professional massage treatments each year – it might begin to pay for itself. For others who do not regularly suffer from tight fascia and sore muscles, despite how impressive the technology is, the Therabot might simply be too expensive to justify in its current form compared with more traditional recovery options.
Regardless, it is the type of product worth keeping an eye on, and it could be something we see more of every year – especially as each generation becomes considerably more appealing, quieter, less expensive, more consistent, and equipped with additional features and manual controls.
