The Wall Between Fitbit and Apple Health Is Finally Coming Down

Google is rolling out an update that lets Fitbit users connect their workouts, steps, vitals, and other data directly to Apple Health, closing a long-standing gap between the two ecosystems. The change arrives with Google Health's 5.05 update, and it reverses a limitation that had frustrated owners of Fitbit hardware since the platform transition earlier this year.

How the New Sync Works

With version 5.05 installed, linking the two services takes only a few taps. Users open Google Health, tap the profile icon, select "Partner apps," and choose Apple Health to establish the connection. Once linked, Fitbit-tracked workouts, step counts, and vitals flow directly into Apple Health without any intermediate tools. The functionality was first reported by 9to5Mac.

Before this update, the data pipeline ran in only one direction. Users could import Apple Health data into Google Health, but there was no native path to send Google Health information back to Apple Health. Anyone who wanted their Fitbit metrics inside Apple Health had to rely on third-party apps such as Power Sync for Fitbit or Fitbit to Apple Health Sync, or piece together some other workaround. The 5.05 update removes that dependency entirely.

A Follow-Up to a Rocky Transition

The syncing feature lands several months after Google Health replaced the Fitbit app in May. That transition did not go smoothly. Users raised concerns over the new AI health coach, the redesigned user interface, and a range of other issues shortly after the app launched. Google has since addressed some of those complaints, and the new Apple Health connection represents another step in stabilizing the platform and restoring functionality that Fitbit owners expected. For anyone who divides their tracking between a Fitbit device and an iPhone, the update resolves one of the more practical pain points created by the switch.

Smart Health Links for Sharing Records

Alongside the Apple Health sync, Google announced a second addition aimed at medical data sharing. According to Google's announcement, users in the United States can now use Smart Health Links to share medical records with a healthcare provider or a family member. Creating a link starts in the Health tab, where users open the "Medical" section, select "Shareable records," and tap the "plus" icon. From there, they can choose which data to include in the link and share it through a URL or a QR code.

The Smart Health Links feature extends Google Health beyond fitness tracking and into records management, giving users a direct way to hand off specific medical information without exporting files or granting broad account access. Google has confirmed the feature only for the US at launch, and the announcement does not address availability in other regions.

What It Means for Users

Taken together, the two additions push Google Health further toward being a hub that plays well with the wider health-tracking landscape rather than a closed system. The Apple Health connection is the more immediately useful change for the enthusiast crowd, since it lets Fitbit hardware coexist with an iPhone-centered setup without the friction of third-party bridges. Users who held off updating after the bumpy May transition now have a concrete reason to install version 5.05, and we are keeping an eye out for how quickly the record-sharing tools expand beyond the US.
