Navigating the high costs of an international tournament run isn't easy, but local hospitality made all the difference for a fan visiting Texas.

Traveling across America for the 2026 World Cup was a financial commitment for visiting supporters. Cross-country flights, peak hotel pricing, and high ticket costs turned two-week trips into major expenses.

Yet despite the steep price tag, fans turned out in historic numbers. The tournament shattered the all-time World Cup attendance record, drawing over 6.8 million stadium spectators across 104 matches. And another nine million supporters packed official Fan Festivals throughout the host cities.

An England fan ( Hallaroundtheglobe on Instagram) revealed that following his team for two weeks during the World Cup group stages in the USA cost a total of £4,089 ($5,463).

Traveling in a group of four, the biggest expense was transport at £1,528 ($2,042), covering flights across London, New York, Dallas, Austin, and Boston, alongside trains, buses, and shared Ubers.

Match tickets for England's games against Croatia, Ghana, and Panama totaled £1,044 ($1,395), which stayed reasonable by purchasing face-value Category 2 tickets through the England Supporter's Travel Club to dodge steep resale markups.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks came to £598 ($799), with meals ranging from an $8 spot in New York to a $52 barbecue spread in Austin, though massive portion sizes meant they only needed to eat once or twice a day.

Accommodation totaled £567 ($758) per person by smartly locking in Airbnbs with free cancellation across multiple cities before the tournament draw and dropping the unneeded bookings later.

Drinks added £244 ($326), spanning from $1 beers at Coogans in Boston to $25.27 stadium beers at MetLife, while activities totaled £108 ($144) for sights like the Fort Worth Rodeo, Topgolf, and One World Trade Center.

Beyond the numbers, the trip was made extra special by an act of local American hospitality, when an Austin family treated the group to lunch and a day out on their boat completely for free.
