Hey, it's Mary Ellen! Recently, I flew about 30 hours in United economy class to and from stunning Cape Town, South Africa. Between hanging out near Boulders Beach with waddling penguins to being mere feet away from lions on safari, every minute of my long-haul economy flights was worth it!
The trip was unforgettable, but I was also thrilled that the flights earned me close to 10,000 United miles. But if I took the exact same flights next month? They would earn me absolutely NOTHING. If you're a United Airlines fan, keep reading because things are about to change!
Points and miles tip of the week
United Airlines is a favorite carrier for many, which is why the major overhaul to its MileagePlus awards program is such a big deal. Beginning in April, tickets purchased on the airline will earn vastly different rewards, depending on whether or not you are a United co-branded cardholder.
Here are a few important things to know:
-
Don't even think about earning miles on Basic Economy tickets if you have neither a United co-branded card nor Premier Status. You'll earn absolutely NOTHING. Whomp, whomp. ðŸ˜
-
Beginning in April, having a United co-branded card will really pay off because you'll earn much higher rates. But if you're considering adding one of these cards to your portfolio, be careful of selecting a no-annual-fee option. It may not qualify for the increased rates.
-
Kids under 18 who have a MileagePlus account can benefit if their parents are United co-branded cardholders; just make sure the accounts are linked.
-
Cardholders get a 10-15% discount on reward bookings.
-
Cardholders get better access to Polaris business class saver fares.
TL;DR:One thing that's clear from these changes? United really values its credit cardholders, maybe even more so than its frequent fliers who've earned status through brand loyalty and miles flown. If you love to fly United and are a cardholder, you're likely in great shape. You don't even need to use the airline's card when purchasing tickets — just having one gives you the new boosted rates. If you don't have one and see frequent United travel in your future, you may want to consider adding one to your wallet.
