With high-design new ships coming online with expansive suites and residences, expeditions reaching into wild coasts beyond the poles, and exclusive access to gardens, homes, and the Monaco Grand Prix, journeying the world on the water just gets increasingly desirable. Who needs hotels (unless they're floating)?

But where to turn first? Check out seven of the biggest trends of luxury cruising for inspiration for 2027 and 2028, with insights from luxury cruise advisor Rob Clabbers, founder and president of Q Cruise + Travel , a Virtuoso member agency in Chicago. And get your sea legs on.

Beyond the Port: Deepening Shore Experiences

"Travel these days is not about checking off destinations, but more about creating meaningful, memorable experiences," says Clabbers. "For our clients, this often includes privileged access or experiences that are difficult to arrange on your own: museum access after-hours, visits to private estates or wineries, conversations with local experts, or behind-the-scenes access to museum storage vaults, for example, or inside the kitchen of famous restaurants."

Perhaps the most alluring wrapping of land and sea comes from Orient Express : a braiding of its divine hotels ( Orient Express La Minerva in Rome and Venezia in Venice), trains ( L'Orient Express and La Dolce Vita ), and Orient Express Corinthian into meta journeys that thrill: sailing yacht plus hotel, sailing yacht plus train, or all three on its Grand Italian Tours .

Leaning into the twin trends of cool-cations and deeper shore exploration, Sea Cloud Spirit's 2027 Northern Europe sailings include the British Isles and the Irish coasts. The six-night "Enjoy Britain in Full Bloom" from Dublin to Honfleur, France, includes excursions to Cork City and its historic St. Finbarr's Cathedral, Tresco Abbey Gardens in the Isles of Scilly, and a journey on the Dartmouth Steam Railway in Devon.

On the river cruising scene, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises unveils Cruise & Tour journeys for 2027 (in partnership with sister brand Luxury Gold), offering small-group land journeys pre- or post-tour: luxury hotel stays, guided sightseeing, dining, and experiences like a rail trip in Switzerland aboard the Glacier Express, meandering from Milan to Venice via the Dolomites, and an exploration of Machu Picchu and the rainforest before cruising the Amazon.

For Alaska lovers, HX Expeditions enters the always-popular market with luxury style and the explorer's heart. Newly collaborating with the Alutiiq Tribe of Old Harbor in the Kodiak Archipelago for immersive cultural programming, 2027 programs include an 18-day all-inclusive Alaska Expedition Cruise from Vancouver to Seattle in July. And Holland America Line adds multiday overland experiences as well as a $70 million investment in its Denali Lodge to its 2027 Cruisetour season .

"The biggest misconception about expedition cruising is that travelers feel that they may have to sacrifice luxury," says Clabbers. "That's certainly not true with today's expedition ships, where you can move from a Zodiac cruise amongst the icebergs and glaciers of Antarctica into a hot shower in minutes and then relax with a glass of chilled Champagne with caviar."

Indeed. Luxury expedition cruising leader Ponant , known for its French-fueled DNA that pairs stylish design and high cuisine, offers a very special (almost nerdy) voyage in December 2027: Antarctica: Ocean (Re)Imagined with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution featuring three Woods Hole-curated experts in polar oceans, glaciology, and science and global policy aboard Le Lyrial for 10 nights of daily talks, stimulating conversations, and breathtaking scenery. And from Ponant's partnership with New York's famed Explorers Club: a July cruise to the geographic North Pole and East Coast of Greenland with Peter Hillary, son of Sir Edmund. For adventurers who've always dreamed of exploring Antarctica but could not stomach the tumultuous sea passage across the Drake Passage, Silversea has the answer: The Cormorant at 55 South, its new hotel in Puerto Williams, Chile (the southernmost hotel on Earth), enabling guests booking its Antarctica Fly Cruise itinerary to take a charter flight from there to Antarctica's King George Island for boarding Silversea's newest expedition ship, Silver Endeavour . In 2027, Crystal Cruises deepens its high-luxury onshore reach via its partnership with sister brand Abercrombie & Kent . "The Rhine, Danube, and other European rivers are classics," says Clabbers, "with new beautifully designed ships added there. But one of the most exciting developments in river cruising is the expansion beyond Europe's classic waterways."

Case in point: In late 2027, Viking will launch its first-ever river voyages in India with the new 80-guest Viking Brahmaputra , purpose-built for the river it's named for. Its 15-day Wonders of India itinerary pairs an eight-day river voyage through Assam with hotel stays in Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. In 2028, sister ship Ganges will join with journeys on the Brahmaputra as well. And conservation-led, experiential travel brand andBeyond launches its second yacht in December 2026: the 15-suite Amazon Explorer (designed by yacht architect Ken Freivokh and Adriana Hoyos Interior Design), which will cruise the Peruvian Amazon.

Meanwhile, Egypt's Nile River remains forever in style. In late 2026, AmaWaterways will debut its third ship in the destination, the 38-suite-and-stateroom AmaNubia , which will pair Luxor-Aswan itineraries with stays at Four Seasons Hotel and First Residence in Cairo.

Storied National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions took to Europe's rivers for the first time in 2026 with two itineraries on the Rhine; in 2027, a new ship, the blue-hulled, 120-guest Evolve, joins the party, which will expand to holiday sailings. And Celebrity Cruises joins river-mania for the first time in 2027: Five new ships will ply the Danube and the Rhine.

Port to Plate: Culinary Offerings and Experiences That Get to the Heart of a Place

"Food is one of the most powerful ways travelers can connect with a destination," says Clabbers. "Think authenticity, more than formality. Travelers want to taste a destination as much as they wish to see it." Luxury cruising is listening: In 2027, Oceania Cruises builds on its robust culinary program (including port-themed Chef's Market dinners, Culinary Discovery Tours, and cooking classes in its Culinary Centers), with two exclusive culinary experiences aboard its new ship, Sonata , which sets sail in August 2027. La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France is an 18-seat experience that celebrates the heritage and craftsmanship of French gastronomy; Nikkei Kitchen showcases the fusion of Peruvian ingredients and Japanese culinary techniques.

Does it get any more authentically French than a grand-mère? On AmaWaterways ' AmaDante and AmaLyra's Paris and Normandy Seine routes, a real-life French grandmother, a mamie , hosts intimate, hands-on cooking sessions featuring classic French sweets like tarte tatin and madeleines.

Hoteling at Sea and Its Ripple Effect

The hoteling of the high seas shows no sign of slowing. In 2027, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection expands its itineraries aboard its three high-luxe, spacious motor yachts (Evrima, Ilma , and Luminara) with 50 fresh spring and summer European journeys (including new port gems La Rochelle in France, Zadar in Croatia, Nafplio in Greece, and Piran in Slovenia). Four Seasons Yachts ' 95-suite Four Seasons I , which launched in 2026, will be joined in the spring of 2028 by the 79-suite Four Seasons II with expanded journeys in the Adriatic, Greek isles, Mediterranean Rivieras, and Caribbean.

After its splashy debut in May 2026, Orient Express Sailing Yachts ' 54-suite Corinthian with its golden age of transcontinental travel aesthetic from Orient Express architect and designer Maxime d'Angeac will be joined in 2027 by new sister ship Olympian. That doubled guest capacity means that Orient Express's maiden-year Med and Caribbean routes will expand into new worlds with added itineraries in Northern Europe, the U.K., Greece, and Türkiye. And all eyes are still on the horizon for Aman's 47-suite Amangati motor yacht , launching in May 2027.

"The line between luxury hotels and luxury cruise ships continues to blur," says Clabbers. "More traditional cruise lines are incorporating more personalization, design, wellness, and service, similar to the experiences that luxury travelers expect from the finest hotels and resorts."

Explora Journeys' Explora III, which soft-launched this summer, fully embraces the hotel-at-sea ethos: Longer than her older sisters, Explora III largely devotes that added space to a more spacious suite mix that includes penthouses and residences, as well as an opulent lobby with a glimmering bar at the center of the action. Similar moves coming in 2027: Oceania Sonata will be 30 percent larger than her sister Allura while adding just 90 accommodations (carrying 1,390 passengers total); a third of the rooms are suites.

Events and Pursuits: A New Reason to Cruise

Building itineraries with elite events at their heart continues to drive innovative and immersive sea journeys. Golf fanatics, look to 2028, when Azamara —as part of an exclusive new partnership with Premier Golf —will roll out 23 new immersive sailings featuring sought-after courses and destinations, including Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, Valderrama in Spain, Tokyo Golf Club in Japan, New South Wales in Australia, Kingsbarns in Scotland, Old Head of Kinsale in Ireland, Cabot Bordeaux in France, and newly opened Seven Mile Beach in Tasmania.

The Med in Winter: A New Frontier

You heard it here first: Imagine the buzziest cities on the Mediterranean Sea swathed in quiet, with room to roam ashore, linger in museums and cathedrals, have streets to yourself. That's the promise for cruising the region at the beginning of winter as luxury brands explore ways to engage with Europe's most famed destinations in a quieter way before heading to the Caribbean.

Regent Seven Seas Splendor will cruise from Lisbon to Barcelona with calls in Algiers, Casablanca, and Tangier in early November 2027, while Voyager's seven-night "Chianti, Rose & Cava Cruise" departs just after Thanksgiving 2027 from Barcelona and visits Marseille/Provence, Florence/Pisa, Alicante, Valencia, and Barcelona.
