Carnival cuts Elegant Night on select short cruises
If you've been relying on Elegant Night to break out your finest suit or fanciest dress on a short Carnival cruise, you may want to rethink your cruise packing list .
Carnival Cruise Line appears to be phasing out Elegant Night on some voyages of five days or fewer, replacing it with White Hot Night — a change that's taken some long-time Carnival cruisers by surprise on recent sailings.

An Aug. 21 post in the CarnivalCruiseFans subreddit set off a wave of discussion after Redditor talkorpi returned from a four-night Carnival Glory sailing and found that Elegant Night had been cut from the cruise schedule in favor of White Hot Night. The experience, they wrote, was a confusing one.
"They still had photo backdrops with diamonds and stuff, and plenty of people showed up dressed for formal night, but Carnival was very clear that it was not actually Elegant Night," talkorpi noted. "Even the crew told us that the dress code was 'cruise casual' and that they don't use 'elegant night' to describe it anymore — but it still felt like such a weird mismatch."

The shift away from cruise elegant theming on short cruises isn't just anecdotal. I haven't hit a White Hot Night short sailing myself yet, but based on what cruisers are reporting and what Carnival's updated FAQs confirms, here's what you need to know.
Under its "What to Wear?" section, Carnival now states that guests should pack an all-white outfit for the White Hot Night Party, which is offered on itineraries of six days and longer and select short-duration voyages (five days or less).
For cruise elegant, the guidance draws a clear line: select cruises of five days or less will have one elegant evening, and short sailings that don't include an elegant evening will host a White Hot Night instead. Voyages of six days or more will continue to host two cruise elegant evenings.
The net result: If you're booked on a three- , four-, or five-day Carnival sailing, there's a real chance your formal night has been replaced by an all-white party — though Carnival's use of the phrase "select" sailings means it isn't universal across every short cruise.
Cruisers are divided but not surprised by Carnival's Elegant Night phaseout
The Reddit thread made it clear that not everyone is mourning Elegant Night's departure from the short-cruise lineup.
"Elegant night isn't what it used to be anyways," commenter WerkQueen wrote. "Last elegant night my brother wore jeans (much to my dismay!) Make whatever night you want elegant night."
Commenter gwwwhhhaaattt echoed the sentiment.
"Maybe 15 years ago I would actually bring a suit. Now I just wear a polo shirt and jeans and I still feel like I'm overdressed compared to some people."

Still, some cruisers aren't ready to let the tradition go — dedicated formal night or not.
"I don't care if there's Elegant Night or not, I'm bringing my fancy dress and I'm wearing it," Beaglescout15 declared. "And in no way am I eating dinner wearing all white. That's just begging to spill something on yourself."
That last sentiment may resonate with anyone who's navigated a cruise ship dining room in a white outfit.
What to know if you're booking a short Carnival cruise
I took my very first cruise with Carnival nearly 20 years ago, and I've watched the line's onboard programming evolve considerably — and this particular change has real implications for how you pack for a short getaway.
If you're booked on a Carnival sailing of five nights or fewer, here's what to keep in mind.

Check Carnival's FAQs or contact your travel agent before you sail. The "select sailings" language means the format isn't guaranteed either way. Confirming ahead of time will save you from packing dressy clothes you won't need — or missing the perfect occasion to wear a fancy outfit you would have loved to bring.

Pack an all-white outfit just in case.If you like to participate in theme nights on a cruise, pack white so you're prepared. Even if your sailing retains a Cruise Elegant evening, White Hot Night is showing up on many sailings, so it's worth being dressed for the party.

If formal night matters to you, book a longer cruise.Carnival sailings of six nights or longer currently host two elegant evenings. For cruisers who love dressing up, that's the more reliable option.

Update: Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed the change on Aug. 25, saying it applies to a few ships sailing short itineraries and passengers will be notified by email before their cruise if White Hot Night will replace Elegant Night on their sailing.
"Please don't worry, Elegant Night isn't going anywhere," he added.
