Carnival gives new life to shoes cruisers leave behind
If you've ever accidentally left a pair of flip-flops or sneakers behind in a cruise ship stateroom, you've unknowingly contributed to a problem the cruise industry rarely talks about: what happens to all that unclaimed stuff. Carnival Cruise Line is now doing something about it, at least when it comes to footwear.
Carnival has become the first cruise line to partner with Sneaker Impact , a Miami-based organization that specializes in keeping used shoes out of landfills. The new initiative is rolling out fleetwide across Carnival's U.S. ships, giving both passengers and crew a way to recycle shoes they no longer want, and making sure forgotten pairs don't end up in a landfill. Shoes in good condition are even used to empower micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries.
Carnival passengers forget a variety of items on board
As Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald has shared in posts on his popular Facebook page, cruisers leave a lot of items behind on the line's ships, and crew don't rush to toss forgotten belongings. Carnival tries to reunite guests with left-behind items — crew gather them from cabins and around the ship, sort, and label them. Passengers can fill out a lost item form on Carnival's website and if their item is found, Carnival will ship it to them.
While giving followers a look at items left behind during one cruise from Miami on Carnival Conquest in an October 2025 video — items like jewelry, glasses, clothing, and phones — Heald noted that the process to reunite guests with their items can take some time.
Heald explained that it's all cataloged on board and then it has to be offloaded in the ship's home port.
"It all has to go back to Miami," he said. "But it won't go off this cruise, it'll go off next cruise because it has to go through customs and all the other paperwork has to be done and then — and then —we'll try and get it back to you."

Unclaimed shoes from Carnival ships will get new life
Through Carnival's partnership with Sneaker Impact, left-behind shoes that aren't claimed after a cruise are now recycled instead of discarded. Passengers and crew also have the option to donate any unwanted shoes to the program before disembarking.
Both unclaimed and donated shoes get shipped to Sneaker Impact's Miami facility, where a proprietary sorting system determines what happens next. Shoes still in good, wearable condition are offered to small business owners in developing countries, who resell them locally — creating income for the sellers while making affordable shoes more accessible in markets where they may be hard to come by.
Shoes that are too worn out to resell don't get tossed. Sneaker Impact breaks them down and recovers raw materials that can be repurposed into things like athletic surfaces, yoga mats, and components for new footwear.
Carnival program stands to recycle 50,000 pairs of shoes
The pilot data on the shoe recycling program shows real promise. According to Carnival, just five ships collecting shoes in July kept more than 500 pairs out of landfills in a single month.
"Scaled across our full fleet, we see the potential to give new life to about 50,000 pairs of shoes," Benton Lobo, Carnival's vice president of compliance and environmental operations, said in a press release . "It's proof that a small idea can add up to a real impact, both on board and in communities around the world."
That's a meaningful number for an initiative that costs guests nothing and barely changes the onboard experience — you're just doing something better with shoes you were going to leave behind anyway.

Sneaker Impact CEO Moe Hachem framed the partnership as a shared values match, noting the collaboration is designed to make it "easy for guests to give their unwanted footwear a second life through reuse and responsible recycling."
The shoe recycling program is a small piece of a much larger sustainability strategy at Carnival Corporation, which spans all eight of its cruise brands and includes broader efforts around waste reduction and circular economy practices.
Well-worn shoes are a smart cruise packing choice
For Carnival cruisers, the new initiative makes taking a well-broken-in pair of shoes on a cruise an even better cruise packing tip. Comfortable shoes are a must on a cruise — you'll do more walking than you expect on the ship and in ports.
"Even if you're just getting in a bus at the end of the pier. You want comfortable shoes and you want something that can get wet," TravelHost's Come Cruise With Me Editor in Chief Dan Kline recommends in a video about things you must pack for a cruise .
And now on Carnival cruises, if you're ready to retire those worn-in shoes by the end of your vacation, you can donate them to Sneaker Impact before you get off the ship.
I learned the hard way earlier this year on an Alaska cruise with Carnival Corp.'s Holland America Line that packing broken-in shoes for a cruise is a tip you don't want to overlook. Even though I knew better, I took brand-new walking shoes on my cruise and paid for it in blisters. If I'd seen a shoe recycling box on board the ship, I'd probably have dropped those new shoes in by the end of the trip.
