Carnival responds to viral buffet fork foot-scratching video

A viral moment at the Lido Marketplace buffet has cruisers talking — and not in a good way.
A short series of videos, reportedly filmed aboard Carnival Sunrise, shared to Instagram by user @lucky_charmedcourt show a female passenger scratching her flaking bare foot at a dining table, then escalating to a metal fork for a more thorough scratch, all while seated near other guests.
The idea of the fork then being placed back on the table to be washed and reused by another guest rather than removed from service entirely is largely what sent the internet into a collective shudder. The videos have pulled in millions of views and a wave of horrified reactions, with commenters saying they were rethinking touching anything at a cruise buffet again.

Carnival issues social media statement about fork foot-scratching video
Carnival didn't stay quiet for long. The cruise line addressed the incident head-on in a statement posted to social media on July 22.
"We can confirm that forks are intended for food, not foot care. Once we became aware of the situation, our team quickly addressed it with the guest and removed the utensil from service," Carnival wrote.
The cruise line leaned into a bit of the humor while still taking the hygiene concern seriously.
"While the video may be generating laughs and gasps online, cleanliness and hygiene are no joke to us. Our crew works hard every day to maintain high standards across our feet
fleet and to ensure all guests enjoy a safe, clean, and comfortable vacation," the statement continued.

Why the viral incident and Carnival's response matters to cruisers
Buffet dining has always drawn extra scrutiny when it comes to hygiene — shared serving utensils, high passenger volume, and close quarters make sanitation a top priority for cruise lines, not just a PR talking point.
Carnival, like other cruise lines, follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vessel Sanitation Program guidelines, and crews are trained to intervene quickly when a hygiene issue is spotted.

That appears to be what happened here, once the cruise line was made aware of the incident. Once flagged, Carnival spoke with the guest and the utensil was removed from circulation, which is the standard cruisers should expect anytime something like this occurs.
Carnival's sanitation protocols work, but they can't control passenger behavior
Buffet hygiene is a common concern highlighted in cruise Facebook groups and other online forums. Earlier this year, Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald defended the cruise line's approach to encouraging handwashing at the onboard buffet after a passenger expressed alarm about the number of diners who bypassed the handwashing stations at the buffet entrance.
Heald noted that competitors' "washy washy" singing at the buffet to encourage handwashing is a "fun gimmick," but he didn't agree with the passenger's suggestion that not pressuring passengers to wash their hands is "inviting outbreaks."

Even when passengers don't do their part to avoid spreading germs, Carnival's sanitation protocols have proven successful. The cruise line hasn't had an illness outbreak since 2022, while CDC data reported multiple outbreaks on other lines in the last few years.
The ship in question, Carnival Sunrise, even scored a perfect 100 on its CDC inspection in February 2026.
Preventing illness on a cruise is a shared responsibility
CDC inspection scores are a useful resource for travelers planning a cruise, but it's important to keep in mind that they don't eliminate your risk of getting sick.
"The single most important thing is to wash hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and water for a requisite 20 seconds," Peter Chin-Hong, MD , an infectious disease expert and professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco told Verywell Health . "And remember that norovirus cannot be prevented by hand sanitizers."

Viral "gross cruise moment" videos tend to have a short shelf life, but they do spotlight something worth remembering: onboard cleanliness is a shared responsibility between crew and guests. Carnival's crews perform rigorous daily sanitation across dining venues, but passenger behavior is the wildcard that neither policy nor training can fully control.
