NEED TO KNOW

  • Carnival's new ship, Carnival Destiny , will debut in 2029 as the first of three Ace Class vessels

  • The name harkens back to a Carnival's previous vessel that broke the world record for largest cruise ship

  • Carnival Destiny will sail to destinations in the Paradise Collection, including Celebration Key and Half Moon Cay

Carnival Cruise Line is looking at its past for the name of its "next generation" vessel that's soon to set sail.

On Friday, July 10, Carnival officials met in Italy for the steel-cutting ceremony for the company's newest ship — set to arrive in 2029 as the first of three new "Ace Class" vessels. To mark the occasion, executives met at the Fincantieri shipyard to reveal the ship's name and showcase a 3D hologram of the design.

"The name of the first ship in this new class will carry a name that I think will bring meaning for all of us," Carnival's president Christine Duffy said during the event. "Because we are building on our history while we move forward with the new Carnival Destiny ."

The name harkens back to the company's vessel that debuted in 1996. At the time, the original Carnival Destiny was considered the world's largest cruise ship and the first vessel to exceed 100,000 tons.

In 2013, the vessel returned to the shipyard in Italy for a 49-day dry dock and $155 million makeover. At the time, it was one of the largest refits across the entire cruise industry. The ship later reentered service under the new name Carnival Sunshine

Duffy added during the event: "Like her original, she is a big step forward not only for Carnival, but we believe for the industry."

The company says the new Destiny will be the "most outward-facing megaship at sea," with an "unprecedented" number of ocean-view balcony cabins, a reimagined lanai deck and more than 4.5 acres of glass that'll open sightlines across the ship.

"Together, these elements will create ocean views from more places on board, bringing the ocean into constant view and redefining how guests connect with the sea," a July 10 press release says.

More than 70% of the vessel's venues and attractions will be entirely new concepts for the brand. The new offerings include reimagined dining, bars and lounges as well as immersive entertainment and outdoor spaces.

When Carnival Destiny sets sail in 2029, it will bring guests to destinations in the Paradise Collection by Carnival, including Celebration Key on Grand Bahama, RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay and Isla Tronicale in Roatan.
