How Legend Of The Seas Changed My View Of Cruise Holidays

I'd somehow made it to my late twenties without ever setting foot on a cruise ship .

I'd heard all the stereotypes: they're overcrowded, the rooms are tiny, the food is average, and after a day or two you'll be climbing the walls with boredom. So when I was invited onboard Royal Caribbean's brand new Legend of the Seas before its official launch, I was genuinely intrigued, but I wasn't convinced I'd come away a cruise convert.

A few days later, I completely understood why so many people keep booking cruise after cruise.

This isn't a traditional review. It's everything that genuinely surprised me as a first-time cruiser, from the things I hadn't even considered to the moments that made me think, "Okay... I get the hype now."

First things first: boarding was far less stressful than I expected

I had mentally prepared myself for airport-style queues, lots of waiting around, and dragging a suitcase from one end of the ship to the other.

Instead, the check-in process was surprisingly seamless.

There were staff everywhere directing people, my luggage was taken almost immediately and delivered straight to my cabin, and before I knew it I was walking around with nothing but my phone and sunglasses, trying to work out where to explore first.

It set the tone for the rest of the trip: everything felt incredibly well organised.

I knew the ship was big. I still wasn't prepared for how big

People often describe cruise ships as floating cities, but I honestly thought that was just marketing. It isn't.

By the end of one day I'd accidentally walked over 10,000 steps without ever leaving the ship.

Every time I thought I'd reached the end, I'd discover another pool deck, another bar, another restaurant, another theatre or another beautifully designed space I'd somehow missed. More than once I found myself saying, "Wait... there's another floor?"

I definitely got lost a couple of times, but every crew member I asked immediately pointed me in the right direction with a smile.

It feels much more like a luxury resort than a boat

One thing I wasn't expecting was how quickly I forgot I was actually at sea.

The ship doesn't feel like you're confined to one space. In fact, it feels more like a resort that just happens to move between destinations overnight.

I completely underestimated how much thought had gone into the design

I'm someone who loves noticing little design details, so I found myself constantly stopping to admire different parts of the ship.

There were sculptures, artwork, and carefully designed interiors everywhere I looked, and I ended up taking far more photos than I'd expected because every new area looked completely different from the last.

It didn't feel like endless identical corridors. It genuinely felt thoughtfully designed.

My cabin was far more spacious than I'd imagined

Before arriving, I'd convinced myself I'd be squeezing around a tiny room. Instead, I walked into a cabin that felt surprisingly roomy.

There was plenty of wardrobe space, lots of shelving in the bathroom, somewhere to unpack properly instead of living out of a suitcase, and enough space to actually relax after a busy day.

Even better, it was incredibly quiet at night. Considering there were thousands of people onboard, I slept brilliantly.

I spent days waiting for seasickness... and it never came

One of the things I was most nervous about before boarding was the movement.

I'd convinced myself I'd spend the whole trip feeling like I was constantly trying to find my balance, with glasses sliding across tables every time the ship hit a wave.

The reality couldn't have been more different.

For most of the trip, I genuinely forgot I was on a ship. Now and then there was a gentle rocking sensation – usually when I was lying in bed or sitting quietly – but it was subtle enough that I barely noticed it after the first day.

Even while eating, walking around, or watching shows, everything felt remarkably stable. At no point did it feel like the dramatic swaying I'd imagined, and I never saw drinks toppling over or people struggling to keep their footing.

Of course, sea conditions can vary from sailing to sailing, but as someone who'd built up the movement in my head as one of the biggest downsides of cruising, it turned out to be one of the biggest non-events of the whole trip.

The food genuinely exceeded my expectations

I'll admit - I expected cruise food to be a giant buffet and not much else.

While the Windjammer Marketplace is enormous (and has just about every cuisine you could think of), what impressed me most was the quality and variety.

One detail I really appreciated was that everyone was asked to wash their hands at dedicated sink stations before entering. It's such a simple thing, but it immediately showed how much emphasis Royal Caribbean places on cleanliness.

There really was something for everyone, whether you wanted something light, comfort food, or something a little more adventurous.

Hollywoodland Supper Club was one of the highlights of the trip

One evening we were invited to experience Hollywoodland Supper Club, and it genuinely felt like stepping back into Hollywood's Golden Age.

The intimate venue combined beautifully presented multi-course dining with expertly paired cocktails and live jazz-inspired performances, creating an experience that felt as much like theatre as it did dinner.

Before each course, the staff explained every dish and drink in detail, making the whole evening feel incredibly immersive.

The attention to detail – from the music to the service – made it one of those experiences that felt genuinely special rather than just another meal.

There was so much happening that I couldn't possibly do it all

One of my biggest worries before boarding was that I'd get bored.

That couldn't have been further from reality.

There was a huge fitness centre, a jogging track overlooking the ocean, sunrise yoga and stretching classes, massage taster sessions, multiple swimming pools, live music throughout the day, quizzes, performances, bars, lounges and a nightclub every evening.

It actually became difficult deciding what to do next because there was always something happening somewhere.

You could have a day packed full of activities – or spend hours doing absolutely nothing with a frozen margarita by the pool.

Both felt equally acceptable.

The entertainment wasn't what I expected. It was better

One of the biggest surprises was the quality of the entertainment.

We watched Shockwave, and I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing.

The performers combined diving, swimming, dance and acrobatics in a spectacular production set to familiar songs with clever twists. It was the sort of show I'd happily pay to see on land.

Earlier in the trip we'd actually caught glimpses of the cast rehearsing, which made seeing the finished performance even more impressive.

You quickly realise just how much work goes into making these productions look effortless.

The crew made a huge difference

It's impossible to write about the trip without mentioning the crew.

No matter where we were, there always seemed to be someone nearby happy to answer questions, offer directions, or simply chat.

Despite how enormous the ship is, I never felt lost for long because someone always knew exactly where I needed to go.

It's easy to overlook how much the people shape an experience, but their friendliness and professionalism were a huge part of what made the trip feel so relaxed.

Sometimes the simplest moments ended up being my favourites

As much as I loved the restaurants and entertainment, some of my favourite memories were much quieter.

Watching the sunset from the upper decks.

Sitting with a frozen cocktail looking out over nothing but open sea.

Grabbing a coffee first thing in the morning before wandering around while the ship was still relatively peaceful.

I hadn't expected those slower moments to stick with me as much as they did.

Waking up somewhere new every morning never lost its novelty

One of the biggest advantages of cruising is that the travelling happens while you're asleep.

During the trip, we docked in La Spezia, where tender boats ran throughout the day, giving us plenty of time to explore.

We headed to the beautiful coastal village of Manarola, wandered its colourful streets and found a bar overlooking the Ligurian coastline before returning to the ship later that afternoon.

There's something incredibly satisfying about spending the day exploring Italy before heading back to what is essentially your floating hotel without ever having to unpack another suitcase.

So... has this converted me into a cruise person?

Honestly? Yes.

I boarded Legend of the Seas expecting to tick "go on a cruise" off my travel bucket list.

Instead, I left wondering where I'd cruise to next.

The biggest surprise wasn't the size of the ship, the incredible entertainment or even the food.

It was how effortless the whole holiday felt.

Once you're onboard, everything is taken care of. You don't have to think about transport, where you're eating next or how you're getting from one destination to another. Your only real decisions are whether to head to the pool, order another cocktail, catch a show or squeeze in one more dessert.

If, like me, you've always assumed cruising probably isn't for you, I wouldn't be so quick to write it off.

Because I thought the same, and Legend of the Seas completely changed my mind.
