American Airlines Unveils Major Upgrades for Narrowbody Fleet

As Americans continue to travel around the country for business or vacation, a handful of airlines have separated themselves as top tier options for travelers in the United States. Delta Airlines and United Airlines have led the charge in recent years, offering a variety of options to suit the needs of different travelers.

Competitive pricing and aggressive fare deals have proven to be viable business strategies for airlines like JetBlue and Southwest, but one of the biggest airlines in the United States is looking to enter the top tier with Delta and United.

On Tuesday, American Airlines announced a series of sweeping changes and upgrades that will affect its entire narrowbody fleet of planes over the next few years.

Upgrades Set For Hundreds of American Aircraft

These changes include: 4K seatback screens, USB-C charging capability and "seamless" Bluetooth pairing for customers' personal devices.

The fleet is also adding more First Class and Main Cabin Extra seats, allowing more customers the option of switching to premium seating with extra legroom and other perks.

Main Cabin Extra seats entitle customers to expanded legroom, priority boarding, dedicated space in overhead bins upon entering the aircraft and a complimentary drink.

"We're making one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history," said Heather Garboden, American Airlines' Chief Customer Officer.

"From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey."

More than 140 of American's long-haul planes currently feature seatback screens, and that number will expand with the addition of screens to every new delivery from Airbus and Boeing from 2028 onward.

Exciting Additions For American Airlines

American says that the screens will be "among the largest displays offered on narrowbody aircraft in North America," and that fliers will be able to choose from new options that come from the airline's expanded entertainment partnerships.

The announcement of the upgrades to the in-flight experience comes after American's partnership with SpaceX to add Starlink Wi-Fi, announced back in May.

More than 500 narrowbody aircraft will be fitted with Starlink in early 2027, drawing on a powerful satellite constellation in Earth's orbit for online connectivity.

Garboden says Starlink will give passengers peace of mind as they fly, making sure they are "connected and comfortable" without having to worry about inconsistent internet access if they need it during their trip.

"We are excited to bring an at-home level of Wi-Fi experience to our narrowbody fleet, enabling our customers to work, game, stream and scroll endlessly," Garboden added.

After Starlight arrives in 2027, the first new American planes with improved screens and added premium seating are expected to be delivered by Airbus and Boeing in 2028.
