Traveling has historically been encouraged as a way to meet new people and take a step back from real-life obligations. For years, those experiences have incorporated nightlife and libations, intertwined with late mornings and loungy pool days.

But with the global rise of wellness, especially over the last two years, the sector (which includes mental wellness, wellness tourism, physical activity, springs, personal care and beauty, nutrition and weight-loss, and traditional and personal medicine), hotels and their accompanying spas are shifting priorities to meet the modern needs of consumers .

A Global Evolution

The global wellness economy reached $6.8 trillion in 2024, according to the Global Wellness Institute , soaring 7.9% in a single year. As wellness increasingly becomes a primary travel motivation rather than a hotel amenity, even properties characteristically associated with day parties and nightlife are beginning to rethink what the guest experience looks like.

While particular destinations, including Los Angeles, Sydney, Copenhagen, Tokyo and Singapore are known for wellness-minded culture, luxury hotels globally have been leaning into the movement.

Albania's Green Coast Hotel — MGallery Collection is where oceanside sound healing, a five-story multisensory spa and guided nature hikes expand the traditional resort experience. At TheLifeCo St. Lucia, the Caribbean's first medical wellness retreat, offerings are becoming increasingly specialized. At Hacienda AltaGracia, Auberge Collection in Costa Rica, Casa de Agua houses America's first Estée Lauder Skin Longevity Institute. This is alongside personalized longevity programs and holistic treatments, ranging from river bathing rituals to Blue Zone-inspired experiences .

Proper Hotels, meanwhile, are pairing their contemporary, design-forward interiors with increasingly sophisticated wellness offerings across California, Austin and Miami. And in Southern California, properties are embracing high-vibrational wellness .

A New Era For Wellness Travel

With the industry's massive growth, a number of hotels that once touted a social or party atmosphere now cater to a more beauty and wellness-minded travel consumer.

Ice baths, beachfront sunrise yoga, an outdoor calisthenics gym, an Alo Wellness partnership and a focus on Thai beauty have become main draws this past year for guests of The Standard, Hua Hin. At the end of 2025, Thailand's playful five-star resort also launched an exclusive partnership with beauty brand Project Moringa Thailand, featuring 60 to 90-minute moringa-infused spa treatments. All of this followed the hotel's preexisting mud baths. These changes arose when the hotel realized the typical lifestyle of its Standard hotel franchise didn't fit its quiet, retirement town destination.

"As a hotel brand overall, it's very much like a 25 to 35 target audience," general manager Nathalie Cockayne said during a one-on-one interview. "We just didn't get that market segment. So it was like, how can we attract and take care of people who do want to come down to Hua Hin? You could see that our demographic is mainly between 35 and 55."

Leading up to the major shift, the hotel was blending with its sister property, The Standard, Pattaya Na Jomtien—which represents a more characteristic Standard hotel.

"It was a question of how do we work to the clients we're getting and attract more of them, while differentiating ourselves from the other property," Cockayne said. "So that was probably the trigger that then made us go, okay, we need to actually now position this [differently]. They have late night beach parties every weekend until 2 a.m. I leave that to them."

Meanwhile, halfway around the world, legendary La Concha Resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico underwent a major beauty and wellness pivot about a year ago, when it was renovated and reintroduced as an Autograph Collection Hotel.

One of the biggest introductions from the former party hotspot is its grounding Elemara Spa & Salon wellness sanctuary, which blends elements of earth, air, fire and water into every experience, while featuring both indoor and beachfront treatments. This accompanies sunrise yoga, oceanfront lounging, nourishing dining options and even creative programming designed to feel balanced, elevated and indulgent. A guest's palette offering has also matured, with Levant by Chef Michael White bringing a sophisticated Mediterranean concept that speaks to a globally minded, design-conscious diner.

"We leaned into a 'modern tropical' aesthetic," explained Melva Cancel, the spa's director. "We wanted it to be something that feels distinctly Puerto Rican but elevated and design-forward. Beyond the visual transformation, the goal was to evolve the overall guest experience into something more immersive, where wellness, culinary, art, and nightlife all coexist seamlessly. We wanted to attract a guest who values energy and culture just as much as relaxation—a more experience-driven traveler."

Cancel describes La Concha's longstanding reputation as "beloved" with a "strong social scene," that's transitioned in a "more curated, more intentional lifestyle destination, where design, culture, wellness and variety of restaurants and entertainment are all part of one cohesive story. It still has that fun, vibrant spirit people remember, but now it's layered and more refined."

Wellness Is Balance

Part of wellness is staying even-keeled, especially on vacation. The Gale Miami Hotel and Residences, for example, caters to the consumer who visits the bustling Florida city for a little bit of everything.

"It's Miami, so there's naturally a social energy to the experience," says James D'Agostino, the location's general complex manager. "People come here to go out, eat incredibly well, meet people, listen to music, hit a beach club and enjoy the city. We don't think wellness has to exist separately from that. You're connected to the city when you want the energy, but you have everything you need when you want to come back and slow down."

The Gale prides itself on offering grounding wellness options in close proximity to social activity. The location features brand new spa amenities, along with an expansive fitness center. It positions itself as a place to go for a "reset without sacrificing fun." Guests are encouraged to embrace onsite and nearby physical activities in the morning, while regrouping for a day at the spot's beach club, if they so choose.

"Travelers are much more conscious of how they want to feel on vacation," D'Agostino explains. "They still want to indulge. They want the long dinner, the martini, the late night and the spontaneity that makes a trip memorable. But they don't necessarily want four days of feeling exhausted. The new luxury is having options. Maybe you stay out late one night and spend the next morning at the spa. Maybe you get up early for a workout, or maybe you sleep in and do absolutely nothing by the pool for three hours. To us, balance is having the freedom to enjoy yourself and also listen to what your body needs."

Cockayne echoes those sentiments, explaining, "Lifestyle these days isn't only about partying. It is about literally what it says. Your lifestyle. How do you choose to live your life? How do you choose to balance it? What's your priority at the moment?"

Hotel wellness options are so hyper-focused today that Cockayne says it even comes down to the music a guest wants to set the vibe.

"It's now infiltrating all aspects, even when it comes to a soundtrack playlist," she shares, adding that The Standard, Hua Hin offers two different Spotify playlists guests can select to set different moods. "When you're driving from Bangkok to Hua Hin, it gives you a feeling you can choose. Do I want to wind down and go to Hua Hin? Or do I want to ramp up and go Hua Hin?"

Desa Potato Head Bali is also leaning into balance as wellness, as its underground Klymax Discotheque introduced dedicated wellbeing programming in March 2026. During daylight hours, the space shifts from late-night dancing to sound immersions and breath work. Prior to evolving the hotel's programming, its ambiance centered around a party-centric beach club and late nights.

"Celebration and recovery now share even more equal weight throughout the 24-hour cycle, aligning with our mantra of 'good times do good,' " says the hotel's marketing and sales director, Radit Mahindro. "Where travelers once came mainly for daytime beach lounging and late nights, they now represent a diverse mix of music enthusiasts, creative thinkers and cultural-minded guests. It's now common for someone to enjoy a late DJ set inside Klymax on Friday night, then return to that same room on weekday mornings for a sound session, followed by an educational [tour of our in-house recycling facility] with a glass of fresh Jamu."

Nobu London Portman Square is also supplementing its buzzy social scene with advanced wellness. Its new Nuriss longevity clinic, founded by Dr. Anita Sturnham, sits alongside the world's first Nobu Pilates Reformer studio on the hotel's wellness floor.

This further supports the idea that wellbeing grows "from the understanding that celebration and rest do not need to exist in separate categories," Mahindro says. "True restoration is about alignment, connection and balance rather than a strict regimen."
