Like buying a home, getting married and having kids, retirement marks one of life’s biggest milestones. And what better way to celebrate this next chapter than taking that big trip you’ve been dreaming about for decades?

The only question now is where to go. There’s a wide range of great retirement vacation ideas to consider in 2026, whether you’re looking for long walks and lingering meals in a coastal U.S. town, eye-opening exploration at national parks or meaningful cultural experiences in a European city.

Here are some domestic and international destinations that can make that much-deserved getaway feel all the more meaningful.

Porto, Portugal

With safe and easy-to-navigate cities, friendly locals, an accessible public transportation system and a laidback pace, Portugal is one of the best European destinations for retirees. Ivan Shirokov, founder and director of Firebird Tours , suggests planning your trip for spring or early autumn to avoid crowds while still enjoying comfortable weather.

“What makes Portugal stand out is that so much of this history is preserved in the art and architecture, such as the world-renowned modernist works hanging in galleries around the country,” explains Isobel Kavanagh, a travel expert with Audley Travel .

Most first-time visitors head to bustling Lisbon, but experts suggest heading to the smaller city of Porto for a calmer, quieter feel. Not only is Porto slightly more affordable, but it’s brimming with charm across its cozy restaurants and scenic river views.

Cities in Portugal are notoriously hilly, so pack non-slip shoes with good arch support and don’t hesitate to use ride-sharing apps when needed. Central areas like São Bento, Aliados and the coastal district of Foz do Douro have flatter, more walkable terrain.

Jackson, Wyo.

There are several reasons a number of A-list celebrities own properties in the Jackson area of Wyoming — the world-class skiing, diverse wildlife and jaw-dropping Rocky Mountain scenery are just a few. But what really sets Jackson apart from many other Western destinations, according to Fora travel adviser Michelle Souza, is the mix of upscale accommodations and abundant outdoor adventures.

Jackson is known as the main gateway to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park, so you’ll have plenty of access to tons of hiking, biking and fly fishing. That said, if you’re looking to take things a little easier, there’s also no shortage of dining and shopping downtown. Scope out the stunning life-size sculptures at the National Museum of Wildlife Art , soak up the 360-degree mountain views from the aerial tram ride and head to the Astoria Hot Springs for some long-awaited R&R.

If you visit in the summertime, don’t miss the nightly “shootout” street performance in the Jackson Hole Town Square, complete with singing and dancing from cowboys and saloon girls. After, you can meander through the many art galleries and boutiques nearby.

Tuscany, Italy

If your idea of relaxation involves lounging around a villa and savoring leisurely Mediterranean meals, Tuscany is a fantastic choice. “Retirement travel should feel rewarding, not exhausting,” says Luciano Armanasco, founder and tour host at Our Dolce Vita . “Tuscany is ideal for retirement travel because it encourages a slower pace.”

The postcard-like scenery alone is worth a trip: Think sweeping vineyards, olive groves, cypress-lined roads and dramatic cliffs along the coastline. Tuscany also offers a nice balance between sightseeing and relaxing beaches to enjoy, so you can include both in your itinerary.

After marveling at the medieval towers in San Gimignano and learning to make fresh pasta at a local cooking school, relax at the ancient thermal springs in Saturnia. Then, while exploring the historic city centers on foot, stop at one of the many cafes to rest your feet and enjoy a cappuccino and cornetti.

“You can spend your days wandering small villages, tasting wine in Chianti and taking scenic drives through the countryside, all without a strict plan,” adds Armanasco. He says the best times to visit are May, June, September and early October, when the weather is pleasant but not too hot.

Asheville, N.C.

Among Asheville’s monikers, the “Paris of the South” does a particularly great job of selling a dreamy vacation. Over the years, it’s become a cultural hub known for its thriving art and food scene.

“This city is a strong pick for those who want a mix of light outdoor activity and southern culture,” says Paul Whitten, travel expert, tour operator and founder of Nashville Adventures . “[You can] explore the Blue Ridge Mountains and then visit some craft breweries all in the same day.”

Whether you’re interested in Art Deco architecture, sampling the farm-to-table food or just scoping out the quaint shops and street musicians around the walkable downtown area, it’s easy to plan a well-rounded trip.

If you can, set aside a day for North Carolina’s Highlands. The drive is a little over an hour and a half, but it’s well worth the trek to explore the majestic waterfalls, dining and golf courses. At over 4,000 feet, this Rocky Mountain escape is one of the highest towns in the Eastern U.S. — and it also happens to be one of the only temperate rainforests in the country.

Port Douglas, Australia

Australia is known for its easygoing vibe, high safety standards and more than 2,800 hours of sunshine each year. According to Ana Musgray , a senior travel adviser with Virtuoso, Port Douglas provides a slower pace than Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns, making it an ideal retirement destination.

“Port Douglas is an excellent base to explore the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest rainforest in the world,” Musgray says. “There are several snorkeling tour companies that cater to travelers seeking a relaxed day out at the reef. Many of these operators also offer half-day tours too.”

Musgray suggests taking an all-inclusive day tour to the Frankland Islands, where you can see one of the world's highest freestanding natural pyramids, explore the pristine Normanby Island, enjoy a guided snorkel safari with a marine biologist and feast on a beachside buffet.

Back on the mainland, spend your free time taking leisurely strolls along Four Mile Beach, perusing the local art and jewelry at the Sunday markets or enjoying the catch of the day at the seafood restaurants along Macrossan Street.

Charleston, S.C.

While many retirees may flock to Florida or California for a coastal escape, Whitten strongly recommends considering historic Charleston. “It’s perfect for travelers who enjoy great food and architecture without the craziness of a big city,” he explains.

With pastel-colored Antebellum-era homes, moss-covered oak trees and pedestrian-friendly streets lined with gas-lit lamps, Charleston is nothing if not charming.

Active travelers can kayak (and bird watch) in Shem Creek, play a round of golf at Charleston National Golf Club or explore the trails at Caw Caw Interpretive Center . Meanwhile, history buffs are bound to enjoy taking a tour of the Old Jail or the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier at Patriots Point.

When you’re ready to kick back, head to the serene beaches at Kiawah Island or Sullivan's Island, which tend to be less crowded than Folly Beach.

Grindewald, Switzerland

“Switzerland combines breathtaking scenery with exceptional comfort. Retirees can take in Alpine views on scenic train journeys like the Glacier Express , enjoy peaceful lake cruises or explore gentle walking routes,” says Shirokov.

As far as where to go, Shirokov recommends the world-renowned Jungfrau Region. More specifically, consider Grindelwald, which offers an incredible mix of cultural and wellness experiences, easy access by train and convenient proximity to the region’s top attractions.

During the day, tackle the thrilling cliffside walkway at First, explore the dramatic rock galleries at Glacier Canyon, take a cruise on Lake Brienz or ride the Eiger Express gondola up to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in all of Europe, for some epic views of the snow-covered Alps.

Grindelwald is known for its cozy-chic chalet-style accommodations, and while there are many options to choose from, Hotel Aspen stands out for its exceptional on-site restaurant and luxurious spa with an outdoor hot tub with mountain views. The slightly more remote location provides a more peaceful atmosphere, but you’re only a quick (free) bus ride away from the downtown area.
