A new hotel in Canada is taking the classic cabin-in-the-woods getaway to new heights—literally.
Hårtwood, an off-grid tree house hotel in Minden Hills, Ontario, opened on June 1, boasting 15 wooded acres near the protected Dahl Forest and the Burnt River.
Each of the three tree houses sleeps between one and five guests and comes with a slate of creature comforts, including hot showers, full kitchens, fireplaces, Wi-Fi, rooftop decks, and private outdoor firepits. The suites can be booked individually or as a full buyout for small gatherings, celebrations, and retreats.

For Lauren Green, who co-founded Fort Treehouse Co. with her husband, Cam Green, the goal is to offer a distinct new guest experience in a region better known for lakeside retreats.
"Hårtwood introduces a more design-led and immersive style of hospitality to the region," Green tells Travel + Leisure . "While the Haliburton Highlands have long been associated with lakeside cabins and seasonal tourism, Hårtwood offers a different way to experience the landscape—one centered around architecture, wilderness, and year-round stays within the forest itself."
The social center of the site is The Hydda, a Scandinavian–inspired gathering hut where guests can come together for coffee, wine, and cocktails, intimate dinners with visiting chefs and occasional events. A forest spa with a sauna, hot tub, and cold plunge is also in the works.
Designed by Toronto-based architects studio ksa, the tree houses were built around carefully chosen host trees, with the structures tucked into a mature canopy of maple, spruce, pine, and birch. Green says she hopes guests leave feeling "more connected—to nature, to themselves, and to the people they're traveling with."

"Life moves differently in the forest," she says. "Without the constant pull of screens, schedules, and noise, people tend to reconnect with simpler things: rest, conversation, weather, movement, and the landscape around them."
Hårtwood is designed as a year-round stay; Green says snowfall, spring fog, summer storms, and late-fall stillness are all part of the experience.
