Royal Caribbean takes on Mexico’s biggest beach problem
As Royal Caribbean prepares to open its new Perfect Day Mexico cruise destination at the port of Costa Maya on Mexico's Caribbean coast, the cruise line is reinforcing its commitment to improving both the vacation experience and environmental protection in the region.
Shortly after announcing a road improvement project to benefit the Royal Caribbean-owned cruise port's neighboring communities in Mahahual, Quintana Roo, the cruise line is now tackling another problem that community leaders have identified as a key priority.
In addition to supporting coastal health and quality of life in the region, the new initiative will address a situation that spoils some cruise passengers' beach days.

Royal Caribbean to help fight sargassum problem in Mexico
In a new collaboration with the Mexican Navy, local leaders, and the state of Quintana Roo, Royal Caribbean is joining the fight against sargassum seaweed — the foul-smelling brown algae that washes up in piles on beaches across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico during the spring and summer.
Sargassum isn't a problem when it stays floating out at sea — it's actually an important marine habitat, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) . When it's carried to shore by winds and currents, which seems to happen more and more each year on Mexico's Caribbean coast, decomposing sargassum creates a smelly mess that can cause respiratory irritation, harm coastal ecosystems, and negatively impact tourism and quality of life.

Royal Caribbean has made a long-term commitment to strengthening sargassum protection and removal efforts in Mahahual as part of a community-driven working group that's taking immediate action to protect the shoreline. In partnership with the Mexican Navy, Royal Caribbean is adding new anchor points to reinforce net systems that help prevent incoming sargassum blooms from reaching the shore. The cruise line is also deploying seaweed skimming equipment designed to efficiently remove floating sargassum before it accumulates on beaches.
"Clean and thriving shorelines are essential to the people of Mahahual," Royal Caribbean Mexico President Ari Adler said in a press release . "The community told us protecting this coastline is a top priority, and we're acting on that commitment —deploying new equipment, strengthening barriers, and working hand-in-hand with local partners and the state of Quintana Roo to keep these beaches clean."
Sargassum management program will benefit Perfect Day Mexico
Along with benefiting the port of Costa Maya, the local community, and the coast of southern Quintana Roo, Royal Caribbean's investment in the sargassum management program will help to ensure an ideal beach day experience at Perfect Day Mexico .
Expected to open in fall 2027, Perfect Day Mexico aims to transform the cruise experience for Royal Caribbean passengers visiting Costa Maya with a massive resort destination featuring three beaches, six pools, a waterpark with more than 30 waterslides, the world's longest lazy river, and more.

Like Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas, Perfect Day Mexico will offer free admission to Royal Caribbean cruise passengers. Some attractions will be available for an additional charge.
Although Royal Caribbean acquired the port of Costa Maya last year, it will remain open to ships from all cruise lines after Perfect Day Mexico opens, which will allow all cruise passengers to benefit from the cruise line's efforts to mitigate sargassum and improve the port experience in Costa Maya.
