Beachfront homes are a dime a dozen in Florida, a state with 825 miles of sandy beaches. According to a new report from Airbnb, though, many travelers are seeking a vacation home that offers something a little different than your classic “Old Florida” cottage-style getaway. The vacation rental company recently revealed its “ most wishlisted listings across the U.S. ,” and Florida’s favorite is a solar-powered floating home down in Key West.

" The Outpost " is part cottage, part houseboat. It looks just like a tiny cottage—there are even front and back decks—but it actually floats on the water.  In order to reach the two-bed private abode, you’ll need to hop aboard another vessel (don’t worry, the owners handle arrival and departure). Once you’re settled in, you can immediately start taking advantage of everything that sets this property apart: unparalleled wildlife viewing , water activities, and a true sense of being off-grid, even though you still have all the standard amenities of home.

Before you book your trip dates, keep in mind that the Airbnb listing is “designed for guests to spend the majority of their stay on The Outpost or on/in the water.” It’s also casual and a bit rustic; you won’t get five-star design details or ultra-luxe appliances. That said, the owners have ensured it’s outfitted with plenty of things to keep you busy and comfortable.

Traverse the backcountry waters around Key West via a paddleboard or kayak, grab some snorkel gear, fish from the deck, or just spend the full day reading, playing board games, and simply taking in the “breathtaking 360 ocean views,” in the words of a past guest. “If you’re looking to keep it simple and not clutter your day with busy resort schedules, lots of people, and noisy children ... This is your getaway,” shared another guest. If you do want something else to do, the owners note there’s the option to book half-day or full-day sunset trips and ecotour excursions

Other important features to note include the fully equipped kitchen, the topside seating area, two large coolers (in addition to a small refrigerator), a compact marine head shower in the bathroom, and a game room.

While it’s marketed as having two bedrooms—and it can technically fit four guests—The Outpost has just one loft bedroom and then a living space room that converts into an additional bedroom. Don’t let the limited space dissuade you from bringing the family, though. One guest described it as “peaceful, serene, and absolutely beautiful,” adding that it’s “one of the best and most unique glamping experiences .”
