Air Travel in Washington, D.C. May Change After FAA Decision

Washington Manassas Airport has achieved a historic regulatory milestone after receiving its official Part 139 Airport Operating Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The federal authorization clears the former general aviation facility to launch scheduled passenger airline service, positioning it to become the fourth commercial airport serving the Washington metropolitan area alongside Washington Dulles, Reagan National, and Baltimore-Washington International.

The certification represents the first time in 53 years that federal regulators have granted a commercial operating certificate to an existing Virginia airfield.

Over the past five years, federal authorities invested more than $46 million toward infrastructure upgrades, including runway rehabilitation and airfield enhancements. The municipal facility was recently renamed from Manassas Regional Airport to signal its transformation into a major regional transportation hub.

Federal Aviation Administration Associate Administrator for Airports Dan Edwards presented the certificate during a ceremony at the terminal, calling the designation a turning point for the capital region.

"Commercial flights coming into Manassas will provide more economic growth within the community and create another commercial airport to service the Washington D.C. area," Edwards said.

Manassas Regional Builds New Terminal to Reshape D.C. Travel

To prepare for incoming airline passengers, the city of Manassas is advancing a public-private partnership to construct a modern 32,000-square-foot terminal. The planned facility will feature the following key passenger amenities:

• Security screening:Dedicated Transportation Security Administration checkpoints configured for efficient traveler processing.

• Terminal facilities:Modern departure gates, baggage claim carousels, concessions, and at least 2,000 passenger parking spaces.

• Budget carrier focus:Operating infrastructure optimized specifically for low-cost and ultra-low-cost airlines.

Airport leadership expects commercial passenger service to launch by November 2027, initially offering three to four daily departures before expanding up to 24 daily flights. Airport Director Juan Rivera explained that securing the certificate followed extensive preparation and multiple rounds of federal reviews.

FAA Milestone Clears Way for Carriers

Located roughly 40 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., the airport previously hosted commercial operations through Colgan Air before service ended in the mid-1990s. The city has spent the last three years renovating the facility for larger aircraft while preparing to build a new air traffic control tower scheduled to open in 2029 .

Although no carrier has formally signed on yet, airport officials noted negotiations are very close to securing an initial airline.

Airport Commission Chairman Rod Hall highlighted that the certification signals the facility's arrival on a larger national stage. City of Manassas Mayor Michelle Davis emphasized that commercial passenger flights will be transformative, connecting local businesses to new visitors while offering regional travelers a convenient, budget-friendly transit alternative.
