‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ opens at Elkhart Civic Theatre

BRISTOL — "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" opens Feb. 23 and continues through March 2 at Elkhart Civic Theatre 's Bristol Opera House, 210 E. Vistula St.

With music by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin, the musical follows an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents — played by adults — as they vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime.

While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming bell that signals a spelling mistake.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23-24 and March 1-2 and at 3 p.m. Feb. 25.
